Looks like Sadiq Khan will be Mayor of London. Not a huge fan of him myself, but Goldsmith (who used to be my MP) is a massive twat, so I voted for the former and put Sian Berry as my second preference.

Well, he got elected and Goldsmith didn't, so it's a success for everyone.

Sadiq Khan was the best choice for us londoners! Right choicenfor everyone in London especially if he does freeze the transport fare, it will be good for the poor and vulnerablepeople.

The tories got beaten by playing dirty politics and trying to make out Sadiq Khan was a extremist, which went against them.

Their tactics were bizarre but Zac has himself to blame. The fact that he allowed this to happen shows how incompetent he is. It's a shame as he appears to be an ok sort of guy.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Sajid has to do. It's good to see a British Muslim of Pakistani origins and from humble beginnings do well, as it'll give plenty of inspiration and hope to succeed. But let's see what he does as London Mayor. Let's hope he tackles the terrible housing situation in London!

We talking about the same guy that doesn't approve of engaging with moderate Muslims?

The only upside to his victory is that it will help bolster toxic Corbyn's leadership which will continue to cause long term damage to the Labour party.

There is no such thing as a 'moderate' Muslim.

Not sure what that has to do with the new mayor being anti moderation within the Muslim community or his winning hopefully keeping Corbyn in power, but hey, whatever floats your boat :)

Do tell me whats anti moderation and moderation is within the muslim community? So does that mean he is a extremist sympthasiser like tories mentioned throughout the election campaign.

I am a muslim myself and I still dont know what is a moderate muslim that gets quoted by the media, goverment and the non-muslims. We have so maby terms now for the muslims these days, especially thoae who practice their religion to the point they are extreme.

A Muslim/an interpretation of Islam that rejects extremism and terrorism.

It's not very difficult to understand (yet it seems it's very easy to pretend not to) as it is a term used quite commonly these days. The point is, Khan thinks Muslims that openly oppose extremism/terrorism and are willing to engage with our government are 'Uncle Toms'. He can apologise all he likes for letting the cat out of the bag, but he shouldn't be allowed to get away with it just by saying sorry afterwards.

I didn't realise there was an interpretation of Islam where it preaches terrorism and hence the world is suffering extremism and terrorism and nothing to do with geopolitical reasons rather than religion!

Just because a term created by the media and government is commonly used is right! There isn't different groups of Muslim in Islam "moderate/extremist"

Yes he used the term, now you want to punish him, do tell us what that should be. Even though senior Tories and even Zac's sister is accusing him of playing dirty politics and tried to get Sadiq Khan labelled as a extremist for his own political gain.

This idea of a moderate muslim is absolute codswallop. And I find it ridiculous that people who aren't even muslim are telling us how a moderate muslim should be or what a moderate muslim is <doh>

At the end of the day, what may be moderate to one person could be extreme to another person. There is too much ambiguity and uncertainty over the word 'moderate'. Some people actually consider the term to be offensive/divisive.

Unsurprisingly, certain posters fail to grasp this concept.

Thing is this term that is used like you said is a divisive term for Muslim created and widely used by governments/media and accepted by the general public without any real understanding. The funny thing is we are getting told how a Muslim should and how they should practice their religion and politicians Like Zac use it to try and gain in their career rather than good of the people or community cohesion!

This isn't just a few posters who don't understand this, its wider public in general don't grasp this concept.

Isn't it just a way of trying to distinguish most Muslims from the extremists and fundamentalists?
I've seen the same tag applied to Christians when discussing their more radical members or sects, too.
What term would you prefer? Is there one that's not offensive?

Simple terms everyone is a fundementalist, be it muslim, christian, jewish or atheist etc. As they believe in the fundementals of that belief and without that you couldnt be termed as a muslim, jew, christian etc.

I would personally term them as extremist as it has nothing to do with religion more to do with geopolitical situation. We have that in every corner of the world, some use religion, democracy etc for their own gains.

To label someone as a extremist sympathiser for political gains because of their belief is wrong like zac and the tories did with Sadiq and Corbyn to an extent by Cameron. These people have no shame or care for various communities as long as they win and gain something.

That's not what fundamentalist means, though. Conservatives wouldn't change anything, if that were true.
Religious fundamentalism means something specific and I'm not sure what's offensive about the distinction.

I agree about Goldsmith and the Tory campaign. I voted for Khan.
Seeing someone of a Jewish background trying to fearmonger about an opponent's racial and religious background is particularly distasteful.
He simply can't claim ignorance of the history of such things.

How do you define fundementalist and a practicing muslim, christian or jew etc.

To me it seems the label moderate is applied to those who dont actually follow/practice the religion as such and are mere muslim by name tag and are not vocal or political. Should anyone be vocal or political and muslim they seem to get the special label extremist!

Thats the thing and most peoplendont see thatbas problem what the tories did for their gain in the election.
