This is ridiculous. Why would you WANT to be able to call people stuff that would deliberately cause harm? If you have to look to the letter of the law to check whether it's alright to do something, it probably isn't. If it sounds like it might be construed as racist by the person you're aiming it at, then for ****'s sake, don't say it.

This sounds like the old 'freedom of speech' mistake is creeping back in again.

 

What was the intent of the original 'lying camel shagger' comment?

As the COC busybody who was vicariously offended on behalf of the multi millionaire was the one who spragged on Tenfoot Tiger, it's not clear if the target of the article has even read it.
So if the offence depends on the 'hurt' caused to the object of the comment, then it's unclear if there is a case to answer.
I'm sure ambulance chasing law firms, race relations industry professionals and virtue signallers will insist there is but going by the strict terms of the wording of the law, it seems ambiguous.
I saw a lot of people clutching copies of Tenfoot City yesterday. He must be loving the publicity.
On a slightly different note, who remembers the honeymoon period with the Allams when many fans went to matches wearing a fez? Crass and insulting stereotyping of Egyptians?

 

My point is it was a daft thing to say, it was totally unnecessary and clearly aimed at the Allam's Egyptian heritage. Even if it only took him 2 seconds to write it, he must have known that it was inappropriate, especially for what I assume is a fully grown man. Then, assuming there's at least half an ounce of professionalism in that magazine, it will have been proofread twice over by two other people, who would also have cleared it.

It has to be taken into context. Was the camel shagging jibe meant as a joke? No, it clearly wasn't. Of course he'll label it as such now that he's been pulled up in an investigation, but the fact that he's had to put out a long winded, poorly written explanation that laments the lack of good humour in the world (crock of **** though it may be) shows that he knows he's in the wrong. See, if you call an Inuit an Eskimo, that's offensive to that particular group of people, but many people probably aren't aware of that, so you allow a bit of wiggle room. This, on the other hand, was done with full awareness.

I think the thing that bugs me about this is that he has created a big pile of **** for himself, but he doesn't even have the conviction to stand by the pile of ****, he's now sweeping it under the rug and trying to back pedal. He'd make a good politician actually.

 

Your Australian culture has a different attitude to racism though doesn't it? For example it's not regarded as racist to refer to Pakistanis as Pakis and I've heard the Aussie cricket commentators do that. When Aussies call the aboriginal people "Abbos" is that always affectionate?
