Well, we venture down the A1 to visit an old friend this weekend.... step forward Leeds United. Leeds have chewed up and spat out more managers than both, Obi has hot dinners... or the annual manager changers on Wearside. Finally though, they are starting to put a series of performances together under Gary Monk... brother of Harry Monk, Tash's idol. So ladies and gents... what will the result be...... youuuuuu deciiiiiide......... please log in to view this image please log in to view this image The Magpies return to Elland Road on Sunday, as they renew a long-standing league rivalry with Leeds United after twelve missing seasons. We've won three and drawn the other one of our last four competitive visits there, although the most recent one - a kickabout in July 2011 - ended in a 1-3 loss. From that game two players (Vuckic, Ameobi) remain on our books but the only current first teamer who played for Newcastle that day is Paul Dummett. Kick-off is at 1.15pm and the game is a sell-out. If you didn't get a ticket, The Ware Rooms on Carliol Square in Newcastle will be showing it on their big screen TVs with various food and drink promotions. please log in to view this image Selected bottled beers are £1.50 and all pints (including four local craft beers) are half price. Lost interest after "venture". Far too many words. Not enough pictures. Can somebody unplug Chippy's 'phone and laptop charger. PLEASE
I was reading that a win at Leeds would equal our club record of 9 consecutive wins in all competitions. The 11 wins at the start of 92/93 had a cup defeat in the middle of it apparently. The club record for consecutive wins in league matches only is actually 13 over the 91/92 and 92/93 seasons so that one is still some way off.
Jim Dobbin brought all that to an end, I'll never forget it. First time I'd ever sat in a seat at a football ground. Grimsby 1-0 defeat at home.
Screamer it was too. Combination of their keeper having a blinder and us being below par. Went on to lose 2-1 to Leicester the following week. An unknown dwarf by the name of David Lowe scoring with an overhead kick. David Oldfield bagged the other. Pretty sure the cup game that people bang on about was the 2-1 defeat at Chelsea.
0-0 draw with Mansfield in league cup and 2-2 draw with grimsby in the Anglo Italian cup during that run. We should be at least equaling the 9 games, things were much tougher for us back then.
Had a big row at that game! We'd just won our first ten games and went behind to an absolute worldly. The half time whistle went and this twat in front of me started booing!
Depressing day, true to his name, Jim Dobbin was a right donkey, but got lucky with a "hit it and hope" that day. The return fixture at Grimsby though....wow! Never forget being wedged in that tiny away end with half of Newcastle!
The sad thing is one of abiding memories from that season was Kevin Scotts diving header against Brentford
