Indeed. This is one player situation too far. It has to end here or other players will continue to try to roll this club over.

 

I've got a lot of faith in Jack Stephens to replace VVD long term and as long as we spend ALL of the transfer money on top quality difference makers that will improve the starting XI i'm ok with him going for £70m.

 

Unless of course we sign those players and have money left over.

 

I'd go all out for someone like Sigurdsson, who is a genuine match winner on a consistant basis and meet Swansea's valuation.

 

We may still have money left after that.

We won't do that as it's not our way.

I don't know if it was nerves on behalf of Bednarek, but he gave the ball away on several occasions and looked a little panicked in defense. I'm not going to read too much into a friendly debut, but Stephens did look several levels above in direct comparison. The confidence he has gained from last season is kind of visible in his play.

Anyway, I think Stephens/VVD for this season would have worked well and it's a real shame that Virgil is not prepared to play another season as it stands

Except Liverpool haven't made an offer yet for VVD and I don't believe they will. They would have to live with contradicting their public statement at the very top of this thread.

 

There is a way back since VVD has been smart enough not to bleat to the press. It would only be another season of course like Schneiderlin but it could happen. I remember Morgan's rather bemused celebration of scoring, and similar nonplussed reactions by Mané after netting. They may have felt ambivalent but the goals were real.
We can pressure to stay for another season but if we front up too hard then it just means that players will be less likely to sign contract extensions or even join us in the first place. We can insist on a good price, though.

 

Liverpool fans in the pub last night reckon because they are the only team in the running and because of Virgil's tantrum we will sell him for about £40m...................if/when he goes it will be in the £60m region IMO.

 

It may very well be that Stephens is better than Jan, but must remember that Jack has played a lot of games with this team against English opposition. Nerves or uncertainty could explain mistakes, so, as you said, mustn't read too much into a friendly.

 

Nice thread re-title, though a little harsh on teenagers.

Slight sense of deja-vou as I suspect VVD has taken his cue from Fonte and shown just as little nous. I mean getting your preferred new employer state they had given up any approach is pretty stellar. I'm sure that money will smooth his way to the delightful sights of merseyside and room sharing with Lovren. But as the likes of city, utd and chelski look elsewhere a little anxiety may enter into VVD and his agent's world.

 

Probably no point mentioning long term when it comes to us. If Jack performs on a regular basis, it won't be long until he's demanding a transfer too.
