I know there are quite a few boxing fans among us, who probably already know but today marks the 26th anniversary of the sad death of great boxer Jonny Owen, the Merthyr Matchstick. Wad anyone lucky enough to see him fight back in the day?

Never seen him in the flesh fighting but often saw him running uo towards Dowlais Top ,it's actually 36 years since his death in 1980 , it was a tragic accident waiting to happen I'm afraid .

I Agree Tragic. It turns out they discovered he had an unusually thin scull. He would not quit on his stool (which was the right decision) but as soon as he went down the second time i would have thrown in the towel. It might have saved his life but we will never know. Good post!

I actually watched and remember the day well....You could not have put two miss matched fighters together if you tried. It should never have took place in a million years and it would not happen today. Johnny was a super guy and im not being disrespectful here in saying he would be classed as a young man with special needs today...It was a sad day the money people made him fight....

I can still see the desparate look on his father's face.
