It's a bit like when black folk call themselves 'Nigga'.

There's some black folk who hate it, because of the origins of the word, and there's some who embrace it, they've evolved the word to basically mean the same as when you call somebody 'mate'.

Some Jewish folk call themselves Yids, and some are offended by the term. My Mrs generally only gets offended by things that are aimed at her personally, or the BBC's misrepresentation of news from Israel/Gaza.
