Leeds v Bristol City preview ~
    upload_2017-2-13_20-22-51.jpeg

Leeds defender Pontus Jansson is doubtful to recover in time to face Bristol City at Elland Road.

The Swedish centre-half missed the home defeat to Cardiff at the weekend after calling in sick on the morning of the game and is not expected to recover in time.

Leeds have hit a bump in the road with two defeats in their last two games, but boss Garry Monk is not concerned.

"I am very proud of the players and everyone should be," he said. "They have put on a fantastic season so far and want to continue that.

"This group has great heart, they fight and are determined, I am sure you will see that tomorrow night."

    Team news ~

Leeds will also be without skipper Liam Bridcutt, who sits out a one-game ban after being sent off for his second bookable offence late on against Cardiff.

Left-back Charlie Taylor, out since mid-December with an Achilles injury, is closing in on a return to full training.

Bristol City forward Matty Taylor is a slight doubt due to a hamstring strain. The deadline day signing suffered the injury during his debut at Derby which he marked with a goal in a thrilling 3-3 draw, with Lee Tomlin standing by to start in his place if he can recover from a niggling injury of his own.

Boss Lee Johnson must decide whether to retain Scott Golbourne in midfield and has Zak Vyner pushing for a place in defence after being an unused substitute against Derby.

    Match facts ~

    * Leeds have not lost against Bristol City at Elland Road since November 1979 (W5 since).

    * The Robins' 1-0 victory at Ashton Gate in this season's reverse fixture ended a run of eight league games without a win against Leeds.

    * Chris Wood and Tammy Abraham have scored the greatest share of their team's goals in the Championship this season (Wood 43%, Abraham 44%).

*Abraham is the Championship's top away scorer with 12 goals - no other player has more than seven.

    Ones to watch

Three key players for tonight's opponents.
    • bcfc.co.uk looks at three key players who could feature for Leeds United
    • City face the Whites at Elland Road this evening (7.45pm)
    • Wood, Hernandez and Ayling are all profiled
    Chris Wood

With 21 goals to his name this term, the front man has played a pivotal part in firing Leeds into play-off contention. Scooping January's Championship Player of the Month award, the prolific striker, who leads the Whites’ goalscoring charts by some distance, is full of confidence and a player feared by many Championship sides. Having netted seven times in his last seven outings, the former Ashton Gate loanee captured the attention of several Premier League clubs in the recent January window. However, the £15m price tag attached to the 25-year-old warned off any potential interest, and having retained his services at Elland Road, Leeds will be hopeful Wood’s form will assist them in securing promotion to the Premier League.

    Pablo Hernandez

The Spanish attacking midfielder joined the Whites initially on loan from Al-Abrabi, before penning a permanent deal in January. The 31-year-old, featured alongside and worked under Garry Monk during his spell at Swansea City, and plays a key role in Monk’s promotion hopeful Leeds side. The vastly-experienced Hernandez arrived at Elland Road with over 130 La Liga appearances and four full international caps, with his knowledge of the game and natural ability making him a fan favourite. The Castellón-born Hernandez, who can operate as a winger, has scored three goals this campaign and created 60 chances in 21 Championship appearances, making him a real threat going forward.

    Luke Ayling

A familiar face amongst City supporters, Ayling departed Ashton Gate for Elland Road in the summer. Having played 95 times for the BS3 outfit and being the only outfield ever-present in City’s double-winning campaign, the defender’s form has continued in Yorkshire. Playing as both a right-back and a centre-back, the 25-year-old’s versatility makes him by default one of Monk’s most important players. The defender has made a massive impact since his arrival and many of the Leeds faithful are tipping him to be one of the best signings of the season. Having suffered defeat against Lee Johnson’s side in the reverse fixture, Ayling will be desperate to take three points from his former employers tonight, and help the Whites in their quest for promotion.

Johnson happy to suffer selection headache
Head coach admits picking his line-up is no easy task.
    • Johnson happy to face tough decisions on team selection
    • Head coach left several players at home for weekend draw at Derby
    • Boss targeting the double over Leeds at Elland Road tonight (7.45pm)
Lee Johnson is happy to endure a selection headache before every game with a fully-fit squad to choose from.

The likes of Hordur Magnusson, Adam Matthews, Gary O’Neil, Korey Smith, Bobby Reid, Gustav Engvall and Aaron Wilbraham were all absent at Derby County on Saturday – not just from the starting line-up, but the matchday squad as a whole.

It is proving a tough balancing act for the head coach, but one he sees as a positive.

“It’s not easy, but that’s what we want,” Johnson told Bristol City Player HD.

“Sometimes people just look at names – you can write down a fantastic team of names.

“That’s great because we’ve got good competition for places, but we are the ones who see where they are every day in regards of fitness, form and confidence.

“The beauty of football is that it changes very quickly. Everybody has got an opportunity.”

After a 3-3 draw at Pride Park in which City led 3-0 at half-time, Johnson’s side now face another tricky away test against Derby’s fellow promotion hopefuls Leeds United tonight (7.45pm).

“It’s another big stage and they’re doing well in the division,” the boss added. “We’ve beaten them before and we’re going to try to beat them again.

“We want to get wins to make sure we edge away from the relegation zone.

“I’m pleased that we got our mojo back for 60 or 70 minutes against Derby – particularly with our football and the way we played.

“I believe we’re in good shape; we’ve just got to be able to manage games a bit better than we do.

“We’ve got goals in us and opposing teams now fear our set-pieces, which is good. We’ve got threats all over the pitch and we’ve got options on the bench.”
