And one of the wealthiest areas of not just London, but the country. Give me my house with a garden any day of the week than living in places like this, regardless of the status of the area.. Looks like a hell of a lot of questions need answering over this as well, with audible fire alarms either not working or removed and recent refurbishments using flammable materials..

In London, RAW, you get fabulous wealth next door to grinding poverty. It's weird like that...

Numbers of dead, injured and rescued aren't adding up. Looks like it could be a graveyard in there. :(

Aye, gets worse by the minute. Reports on BBC saying parts of the building are still on fire.

12 confirmed dead and many unaccounted for.

Hate to say it but I bet it ends up closer to 3 figures in the end.

Watching BBC who are doing a longer 10 o clock news programme and it's the first video footage I've seen.

    Truly harrowing stuff.

The gap behind the cladding seems to be partly to blame.

The residents had set up an action group to protest about the landlords and the quality of the refurbishment.

    https://grenfellactiongroup.wordpress.com/2016/11/20/kctmo-playing-with-fire/
It is a truly terrifying thought but the Grenfell Action Group firmly believe that only a catastrophic event will expose the ineptitude and incompetence of our landlord, the KCTMO, and bring an end to the dangerous living conditions and neglect of health and safety legislation that they inflict upon their tenants and leaseholders. We believe that the KCTMO are an evil, unprincipled, mini-mafia who have no business to be charged with the responsibility of looking after the every day management of large scale social housing estates and that their sordid collusion with the RBKC Council is a recipe for a future major disaster.

I've been to a client office just down the road from there - truly shocking that this can happen these days. There are loads of these tower blocks being clad to make them look nicer from the outside without doing anything to improve fire safety on the inside.

They pulled down slums to give us these ones. Pound to a pinch that the recent refurb will be at the back of the problem. Modern legal building materials just not burn as those pictures show.

We can only hope Comm that those who reaped the rewards of the profit they made reap the rewards of whats coming there way after the enquiry hopefully stood against a wall and shot.

the old tenement blocks around glasgow were constructed from steel and used to be prone damp due to walls sweating .

    £8.6M refit?

You'd have thought they could have fitted proper fire-fighting kit with that......

Should have been knocking them down not doing them up. Single stair flight buildings like that should be condemned.

    mate
they did this cladding because the building was en eyesore to richer residents in kensington and chelsea etc BUT that's beside the point

the fire safety devices and procedures in this building were abysmal, these poor souls were brought into this country and gave housing association in what was seen as a safe place to live in a ****ing family
    no sprinkler system
    no communal fire alarm

this is going to be one of the biggest tragedys in modern day history.. and people are accountable
what these people went through in their final moments
i can't even imagine tbh mate..

    people need bringing to justice
and i hate the pm. but im so glad she opened a public inquiry into this disaster

rip to those lost.. and i truly hope heaven exists.. i truly do
    and yes

these post war monstrosities should have been knocked down 10 years ago...
