    • Barkley is "one of our dimmest footballers", also calling him "thick".
    • His eyes make him "certain not only are the lights not on, there is definitely nobody at home", adding: "I get a similar feeling when seeing a gorilla at the zoo."
    • Men with similar "pay packets" in Liverpool are "drug dealers" and in prison.
Its a crass article and poor journalism but reporting him to the police for a racial hate crime for those comments is absolutely pathetic.

Does someone want to explain to me why The Sun has suspended him? He hasn't sneaked this vile article into the pages. All he does is submit his copy and the editor chooses whether it goes in or not. Surely therefore the editor should be suspended, he thought the column was fine and approved its inclusion.

It turns out that errant editor didn't know, or chose not to know, that Barkley has a black grandfather.

And that's his fault. He should've researched (hah!) and the fact he didn't means if anyone should be suspended it should be him. If he does his job this article never sees the light of day. Additionally, the implied racism isn't the only thing wrong with said article.

Exactly my thoughts. Seems the Sun not only stop selling their papers to the Red side of Liverpool, they are trying to do the same with the blue side, and probably succeeding.

I'm not defending anyone, as I have not read the article, just the quoted snippets; but how does "compared Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, who has a grandfather born in Nigeria, to a "gorilla"." manage to be construed from the article if there was no knowledge of Nigeria playing a part?

I'm a cynic, but maybe MacKenzie was away any how, and this gets him some publicity, and maybe shows the people of Liverpool that the Sun is on their side on this.

Do you reckon the timing of such an article is coincidental, given it's 28 years ago today since Hillsborough.

Everyone has to be offended by something these days, usually on behalf of someone else. I think the racism part is beyond belief, the more affluent in Liverpool have every right to be offended by being called drug dealers.

I didn't realise the timing and indeed that does add another slant to it.

You've got to be very naive to believe most of the stuff in the Sun and Express.
Full of **** both of them.

The Sun has gone from being hated in most of Liverpool, to being hated in all of Liverpool. Genius.

Everton have now banned The Sun from Goodison.

Kelvin McKenzie is a ****, he's always been a ****, nobody should be surprised (particularly The Sun).

Why is the Editor of the Sun from the Hillsborough period still working for them anyway? And they complain that the people of Liverpool won't move on?

The comments are stupid and offensive because of the drug dealer thing. The fact he mentioned gorrilla and Barkley happens to have a black grandparent is nothing, and it's absolutely ****ing sad that anyone even tried to make that link and turn it into a race thing.

I'm confident that lots of journalists working for The Sun and other tabloids file stories on a daily basis that are rejected by the editor for being inappropriate. You have to ask why they printed this.

A high ranking and experienced journalist with all of the research facilities of a national newspaper chooses to write a very controversial and personal article about an England International footballer.
He chooses to closely compare the player's looks and intellect to a gorilla which he surely knows will land him in enormous trouble if there is any hint of a racial slur......Does he use his research facilities to check his target's lineage???.............
