This was in the 1990s - if this isn't a lesson against nationalism I don't know what is. 100s of thousands of lives ruined. If politics continues as it is in Europe, it will be millions.
I assumed that his partner was a bit of a nutter [he's obviously slightly unhinged himself] and he was frightened of her. The end scenario sorts that out nicely.
I don't like to bang on about the Balkans but I've lived here since 2004 (so I will say this only once). As a fore runner of the EU, Yugoslavia was formed after WWI, eventually combining Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Bosnia, Montenegro and Macedonia. A Yugoslav Passport was recognised throughout the world (like an EU passport). Not to mention Yugoslav sports teams were winning European and world titles. Why the countries all decided to break up in the 90s, who knows, just like Brexit, France, Holland, Italy etc. Recent history does not bode well.

Watched the first episode of SSGB on iPlayer, I read there have been complaints about sound quality and mumbling. I must say I'm inclined to agree, it was at times difficult to understand what was being said. The main issue was the lead actor speaking with a gruff whisper. In fact the German speakers, with a much more direct style, were far clearer. I've noticed it in Taboo and other recent BBC dramas, the lead actor often is a brooding anti-hero trying to deliver their lines with a certain gravitas, I get that, but don't sacrifice clarity for delivery!
