Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe, 34, has been recalled to the England squad.

The 34-year-old has 55 England caps and made his last international appearance in November 2013 in a friendly against Chile.

Southampton duo Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse have also been given their first England call-ups.

England face Germany away in a friendly before a World Cup qualifier against Lithuania at Wembley on 26 March.

    Great recognition for the lad.

But if he gets injured playing for England I'm applying for a German passport the next day!

Too right, one of the very best English strikers around so fully deserved.

I was expecting far worse comments. Happy for Defoe (if he even wanted a recall). Yes, and hope he comes back injury free.

Our midfield is probably as bad as I've ever seen it in my lifetime.

Aside from Alli, I don't see one real top quality player in there.

The contrast between our midfield and Germany's is ridiculous.

Schurrle, Reus, Weigl, Sane, Brandt, Draxler, Ozil, Khedira, Kroos... and they're missing Gundogan and Gotze.

    Vs

Alli.... Barkley, Sterling, Lallana, Dier, Redmond, Antonio, Livermore, Ward-Prowse... ****ing hell... I've not double checked but I reckon they've got about one trophy between them.

To be fair I think most of the German players you mentioned there only have the one international trophy. Some tinpot **** thing.

Alli is a class above any of the others we have there but I actually rate Dier pretty highly (notably away in Germany last time!). The rest of them are a sorry looking bunch at international level, it's a bad day when Jordan Henderson is a big miss.

As much as I like JD his inclusion at his age I feel is another wasted chance to blood one of the younger players ,there is no mileage in his selection at all.

He's got a long way to go to catch up with Sir Stanley Matthews!

I wouldn't say a big miss, with a poor team like ours, we have to use our only real asset which will be pace, of which he has basically none.
