Well that was a depressing transfer window. It's February 2nd. In America, as FSG are well aware, it's Groundhog Day. Like our transfer windows these days...

Speculation. No proof. None at all. The only proof we have of this is from the people who were claiming the deal was done, then off, then on, then off, then on. Bullshit.

    What we know:

    1. The transfer window was 31 days long
    2. We were short on fullbacks and CM's
    3. We pursued a winger, Salah, for about 20 days before failing to close the deal for one reason or another. Was it Ayre's fault? Maybe not. Maybe Chelsea offered more money. Probably. (Which is why you don't wait so long to close the deal).
    4. No activity for about a week, which BR confirms (if he was lying, then he was lying to the fans and the press, not just the press). Fine, he can't reveal all of our plans. But the media still found out about Konoplyanka.
    5. For the last 3 days of the window, we focus our energy on another winger, a 24 year old playing in Ukraine.
    6. Ian Ayre went over and spent a few days in Ukraine.
    7. He did not succeed in signing him.
    8. We finished this window empty handed, even if we needed reinforcements.

Whatever happened over there is going to be speculated on. We can't jump to conclusions. I'd love to be the club that was ripped off that will get the Court of Arbitration for Sport to give us a ruling and Kono gets to sign for us. But as it stands we don't know. We know we've failed for a lot of our targets recently and that can't always be everyone's fault but ours.

In any case, we failed to strengthen. That failure is a mixture of BR/IA/JH's personal failures. BR in going after the wrong targets, IA for not even getting those, and JH not forcing the transfers through as a boss should.

I can't believe all of you. Either Rodgers lied to the fans about JH having money to spend this winter, or Henry actually allocated funds for a number of transfers. I'm pissed off. Not that we didn't get Salah or Kono (didn't ever think we needed them), but that we failed to do something in 30 days. It's like having a deadline, ****ing about for a month, then the day before it's due your computer won't turn on. You don't blame the computer. Rodgers has repeatedly clarified that he a) has funds, and b) has full control over transfers (with the committee and Ayre). Henry is exempt from my wrath at the moment unless it turns out he beat Dnipro's owner at golf the other day.

Send Ayre back to the marketing/commercial department. Let him sign a few deals with his bic and take his picture for the site. Then get a ****ing negotiator in and get some proper deals done.

We're still in a good position, but we need our players to come back soon. We still are favourites for 4th despite the mancs signing Mata.

we need to get rid of the commitee who ever or whatever the **** it is as its ****e!

get someone like cortese in, no one else, brendan tells him who he wants, jh tells him how much money he has to spend on players, simples.

had a feeling some ****e like this would happen, but not necessary the way it happened, ie meeting a buyout clause but refused player.

is ayre now going to be a convenient scapegoat for the owners not spending any money?

whatever it is, too much ****ing about going on at our club with too many people having to agree on ****e first!

1 month, and we spent it targeting players we didn't really need and end up with feck all ffs

Pretty much. Needed DM and full backs, instead we missed out of two AM and embarrassingly so.

I've no idea why we chased after wingers.
It's obvious the defensive midfield needs shoring up, but it's simply beyond the realms of credibility that our transfer committee- whoever they are- can't see that too so, I'm baffled.
I presume a lot has gone on that we haven't known about and we shouldn't judge without knowing the facts, but perhaps it would help PR between the club and fans for them to come out and explain their attempts and why they failed.

Rodgers clearly has a system in mind and that has Gerrard as DM. Assumabley with Henderson as box to box.

In front of that he wants this interchangable front 4. Konoplyanka is a very mobile, versatile and creative attacker who would fit into that very well.

That interchanale front 4 will need delivery from midfield. So the holding mid player needs to have a great passing range, great vision and be able to read a game very well as every one will be constantly moving around. Gerrard can do this. You could even say he is ideal. Henderson then adds the energy and drive.

I know people are worried about this system defensively but on Tuesday the players proved that if every one puts in a shift and defends as a team it will not be an issue.

The next step for me is adding top fullbacks as they will add width and also improve the defensive stability down the sides. The full backs will often be either side of Gerrard, creating a kind of 2323 formation. This is like the shield for the center backs, whilst also the attacks delivery from deep.

    ----------Skrtel-----Sakho-------
    --Finnan------Gerrard-------Riise-
    ------Henderson------Coutinho---
    ---Sturridge-------------Konoplyanka
    ---------------Suarez---------------

Cheeky names for the full backs there.

I say give this midfield time to settle. They have proved they can do it, now they need consistency.

Come off it Kido! I stated facts and standard procedure so look to yourself for pure speculation.

I've never said that we should even consider taking this matter to CAS. It didn't work - move on. Just as Mata is not the sole answer to United's problems then neith Salah or this Plank will have been for ours. Now we can discuss and shout about the type of players that we think we needed. I'm sure such discussions have happened within our committee. However, it would appear that THEY took the decision to live with what we've got and concentrate upon wingers. Now why they did that we can only speculate but we are in no position to castigate them for it - or claim that they are useless negotiators.

As you say, we are in a good position and there are only 15 games left!

We also failed to land Richards on loan. Waited to last day to try and sign him too.

    Glass half full..
We've still got the best striker force in the league
Sterling is getting better game by game
Ford looks to be getting time in the role we all want him to play
We're 4th will most of our hard games to be played at home.
Hopefully the injured players will be back sooner rather than later

Also, due to our "Inability" in recent transfer windows, this should hopefully lead to a review that could reap better results in future transfers

Finally, Moyes is still managing ManU!

This is by far our best shot in years to get into the top 4 again. We all saw gaps and weaknesses in our squad. A real push this January could have really helped us through the last 15 games because we can be certain that the other teams around us will keep on pushing us.

Simple fact is that we didn't make a step forward this January. We didn't go backward either. Unfortunately, you can't afford to stay where you are in this league.

Salah and Konoplyanka might not have improved our weak spots, but they would have improved us. We bemoan our lacking bench, but those two would have given us even more options. Would they have improved our squad? Yes. Our team is still good enough for top 4, but it could have been easier for us.

Whose fault is it that we didn't add to the team though is another question. Did Henry control the purse too tightly and force us to constantly underbid and haggle? Did Ayre blunder and dither? Were our committee decisive and quick enough in identifying targets leading up to January? Did Rodgers really believe our midfield had enough depth to last the season despite the Lucas injury? Did we really just feel that this squad could last the season and still end in fourth so didn't push too hard?

There's a failing somewhere, because I honestly feel we should have added to the squad. Best chance in years and all. No harm in adding some quality and making sure of it. Hopefully this window doesn't come to bite us on the backside or there'll be serious questions asked to the management.

Fair enough. If you trust that the club not signing anyone during this window is fine and will have been discussed by Rodgers, then I can't argue. But I don't see it. We clearly went after a few players and didn't get them at the end of the day.

You're right though. I can't assume its due to us being poor negotiators. However this happens much more often to us than it does to other teams. Even Tottenham get their deals done quick and without CL football. That indicates to me that somewhere someone is ****ing up the process and its naive to believe that it is ALWAYS the other team.

We know we made deadline day mistakes in the past and that we should work on that. Hopefully it happens soon.
