    Bit like mothers day this...

You can make a fuss of them, buy a card, some flowers and a nice expensive present. Basically look like some awesome partner for the day...

Or you could treat them like they deserved to be treated all year round rather than just for one day a year!

My Mrs gets a card, she is not one for going out for an overpriced meal or having overpriced flowers. I did once surprise her by sellotaping a pair of diamond earrings in her card, but being the old romantic that I am told her it was a one off.

Never spent more than a tenner, never will.

The only "card occasion" I agree with is birthdays. The rest are commercially generated

We do almost nothing for Valentine's day, but I make sure to make a big fuss of her some random day a few weeks before.

I'd rather surprise her and do something spontaneous.

I don't even buy birthday cards. Presents, yes, but the card always seems a bit of a waste. I'd rather spend the extra money on something they would like.

You set the bar with that gesture mate, every Valentine's Day she's now faced with the anticipation of a big treat and then the reality of a big let down.....

We have a joint account. My wife doesn't want me to spend large amounts of lavish gifts for her usually because it comes out of both of our money.

I'd got a decent bonus that year and she knows it was a one off. Long before I had kids at university.

Ahhh. You washed your hands of women? A great metaphor and very apt. Well done, the best way imo.

    Rule to the wise.

If you're single... November 14th-Feb 14th... Dont ask anyone out. Not worth the hassle or stress worrying about Xmas/V-day on a brand new relationship.

Wednesday you single folk can start hunting again.

Actually totally against my rule... I did have a first date on Valentine's day once. Back in University when I worked in a mall bookshop there was this hot hairdresser who used to come by and flirt with me on her break. Being young and naive I assumed she was just a flirty person and not really interested in me.

On vday she came by and one of my co-workers, a sweet old lady I worked with, asked her if she had plans, can't remember her exact words but the hot hairdresser indicated she didn't because I hadn't asked her out yet. Of course I had to oblige after that.<laugh>. Especially with my coworker tutting at me. I asked her if she wanted to go get some coffee after work.

After I closed up shop that night went to where hers was and started waiting and whilst I was waiting a couple walked up and banged on the grate and called "Hi T......"... It was her parents. They had driven by to surprise their daughter to take her out to dinner.

Talk about awkward. Not only did our first date start on V-Day, her parents ended up inviting themselves along.
