I'm hoping someone on here knows about bikes?
I am looking at getting a hybrid bike and looking to spend about £600 do you have any advice of good makes or what to look for?

    Cheers

What type of riding are you looking to do ? Distances , terrain etc. ?

There's a massive choice really , just trying to narrow it down a bit

Best advice Rob on top of the rest you'll be given is don't buy new. You'll get a lot for your money for £600 on E bay, there are Scotts, Specialised and even Planet on there in the 250-350 bracket that are in VGC... Big tip, go and get measured properly then say you'll have a think about it... Frame size is key...

Sorry I didn't reply to any messages but couldn't get online :-(
Its only for biking to work and maybe some weekend trips out, (to work I am looking at about 10 miles) so isn't anything major.
I have to buy new as I will be getting it on the cycle to work scheme.
last time got a Claud Butler mountain bike as I was a larger frame then but have lost about 3 stone in 14 weeks so I wont look like an elephant on a child's bike anymore :)

My advice is don't become one of those self obsessed centre of attention lunatics that every body hates, get a petrol powered bike instead and remain a normal, likeable fellow.

:) :) I am much worse then them lunatics, I'm that annoying bloke who stops at red lights and sits away from the kerb so you have to go around me :)
One of my pet hates is seeing people going through red lights and I quite often shout at them when they do it! and if they aren't that quick I ask if it was worth the risk when I go past them.

Get measured, assess exactly what you'll be using it for road/off road both. Agree that there's some great bikes to be had second hand. Does your employer do the cycle to work scheme? You can get heavily discounted bikes on that if they're a part of that scheme.

If you get suspension on the front, make sure it's one you can lock out! I failed to head this advice when buying off the net!

It will be road use with some cycle paths where available,
Yeah it will be through cycle scheme as a great saving to be had :)

If you're predominantly riding on the road I honestly wouldn't even bother with suspension at all. It's ****e and like riding a space hopper with pedals.

I'd consider something like a gravel bike or adventure bike as they're often called now.

Specialized do one called the AWOL which ticks all boxes in one bike.

I'd definitely get disc brakes - even mechanical disc brakes are a huge improvement on rim brakes. I moved all my bikes from Hope hydraulic brakes to Avid BB7 mechanical disc brakes as they are easy to set up and equally as good.

I haven't even heard these been mentioned so will try and search for them,

That is a little out of my price range as only looking at spending about £600 but does look a good bike.

I had heard the disc brakes are so much better and think I will be going for that option

Or the Specialized Sirrus fitted with Specialized Crossroads Tyres would be on budget and tick all your boxes.

Thanks for all your advice, Just quite new to cycling and want some guidance as hopefully will enjoy it even more and might even think about a proper road bike after this one :)

Get out there and enjoy it. I'm a bit of a bike nut, had quite a few bikes in my time - down to just 3 now 2 titanium (one MTB one Road) and one steel single speed 29er. 3 years ago I had about 15 assorted bikes in the garage - mostly retro MTBs.

My god thought I was pushing the boat out looking at buying my second one :).
must admit up to about 18 months ago I thought you had to be mad to cycle but since having to do it regularly I have got the bug a little bit, just wish I had more free time on a weekend as would love to do some long rides out to see how much I can push myself.

Rob Winstanley or Minster Cycles whatever they call themselves nowadays are good for off the peg and are Specialized bike dealers. All mine I've built myself from just a frame.
