Lee Johnson: Bristol City players have set a new standard for themselves after Newcastle United draw

Lee Johnson made six changes to his starting line-up

Lee Johnson believes his players have set a new standard for themselves after holding Championship leaders Newcastle United to a 2-2 draw at St James Park.

Nobody outside of Bristol gave head coach Johnson or his struggling team a prayer against Newcastle's Premier League millionaires ahead of kick-off. But the Robins produced a workaholic display brim-full of fight and character to hold the best team outside of the top flight and return home with a precious point in their fight against relegation.

Johnson made six changes to his starting line-up and watched his team forge a 2-0 half time lead. It was backs against the wall after the break, but City did enough to achieve a result that will give the players much-needed confidence ahead of Tuesday's game at Aston Villa.

Delighted with his team's battling display, City's head coach said: "I've told the players they have set a standard that now has to be maintained.

"I needed eleven busy bees out there and so selected a side that would run around for 90 minutes and work hard. The work rate was tremendous and that is what you need when you come to a place like this and play against the top team in the league.

"I said to the players in the dressing room that I expect to see that standard in every game now. For those who did not play today, or who came on in the second half, that is the level of work rate I want to see as a minimum requirement.

"If anyone drops below that, then they will be hauled off and I'll put on people with energy who are full of running."

City led 2-0 thanks to goals from Aaron Wilbraham and Dave Cotterill, but the second half made difficult watching for Johnson as Jonjo Shelvey and Ciaran Clark hauled Newcastle level to set-up a tumultuous finish.

Johnson added: "The most pleasing aspect was that we had the strength and resilience to hold on and get a result. Make no bones about it, this is a good result and there are only positives to come out of the game.

"We've come to top of the league and had a real go. They couldn't live with some of our football in the first half, and then we have had to do the basics well. They have some brilliant players and we had to roll our sleeves up and show a good attitude. That is probably the most pleasing aspect for me."

City's performance made a mockery of claims that Johnson has lost the dressing room and he added: "The two or three thousand supporters who made the journey up here will have seen how committed the players are.

"It was a good day for the club; the players, the staff and the supporters all came together and showed what can be achieved when there is a positive mind-set. There has been a lot of negativity around this past week and this was the best way to respond."

So why leave it so late in the season to set such standards? One game doesn't count. Put a run together and maybe we'll believe the rhetoric.

Nothing has changed, he took a point , he still lost a 2 goal lead, his performance is dreadful, 2 points from the last 4 games, 4th from bottom, 2 points clear of the relegation zone.

Wigan drew, Burton drew, Blackburn drew, Nottingham Forest drew, have they all reached this new high standard ?

The man is a waffler and not fit for purpose, it is still time to move him on, urgently.

Pathetic little person on the BBC after giving all of the hype...

"It's not easy but for me, as a young manager having dealt with a tough week and then come against one of the world's leading managers in Rafael Benitez, you take your lessons," added Johnson.

to be quite honest I cannot see any problem with this statement ... losing at home and being barracked .. then going to a team that has scored first 26 times not conceded for x number of games in front of 52000, almost treble our crowds... nothing is easy, a learning curve is always nearby even for the like of peeps on here ..and not just in football .. I have a bruised thumb, happened in the week when passing a 7 kg rock , one handed up a slope whilst lying on my back it was a sort of " I knew it was going to happen moment, it happened a few years ago " ... but at my age I can put it down to memory loss...... he obviously learn't something .. SL can see it he said so ... :lipsrsealed:

I don't have to much of a problem with that statement, bit of a "feel sorry for me" but it has been tough for everyone and at least his team this week looked like it showed a bit of fight....long way to go.....needs to keep to a settled side and grind out results.... nothing pretty required!!

It was the same result for Benitez but I bet you any thing he didn't moan about his age, having to deal with his recent tough times and all of his other problems due to older age, having to deal with an owner like he has got and all the other managers that have the same problems.

Johnson is a waffler, he has a benevolent owner, he should have been fired for his failures but he is trying to play the sympathy ploy, he is a complete loser, I'm sorry but I don't trust him, Bristol City is not a nursery for inexperienced little failures..

Bit harsh I feel but respect your opinion!! Benitez has been paid millions and has been around the block more times than I care to remember I and I have witnessed him throwing his toys out the pram!!

its the context, its not so much the physical age, a person just getting his first managers chance at age say 45 /50 would be a young manager ....!

    beware the mist!
