Self explanatory. Good news, another CDM is exactly what we need Link: https://southamptonfc.com/news/2016-12-15/announcement-harrison-reed-southampton-contract
Do we give these youngsters extra long contracts so we don;t have to worry about them leaving after not being played?
Not surprised when it's his Dad that organises the players contracts. Has he played more this season than before? 2 or 3 starts? He's an ok player but not one that is hammering down the door to improve the first team. Do sometimes feel these contracts dished out by Les are a way of putting some pressure on the manager to involve a player that HE thinks should be playing more.
The neggy part of my brain says "is this because Romeu isn't signing his".... (Clearly I've been reading posts on here far too long!)
Please don't say things like that CBK. Not saying you are wrong, but it doesn't bare thinking about.......
It's his very next job ! Well, after negotiating contract extensions for Shane Long & Jay Rod. Then after doing a motivational Christmas video about the Les Re... I mean, Southampton Way. Then after eating some Turkey. Then after appearing in Panto. But right after that, he will be signing a new striker.... Oh yes he will....
That assumes that you should give up on youngsters if they aren't the finished article in their late teens. How will they achieve their potential if given no time to gain experience. We give the most talented time....some will end up with us for a long time and some will move on (and we will get a chunk of money back for them). The only way we can lose is if they do nothing and sit out their contracts rather than play elsewhere....luckily not many are Tommy Forecast types.
If they can actively add something to the first team, I have no problem with what age they or if they are given a 1st, 2nd or 3rd chance. Just not sure why a 1 or 2 year contract for a fringe player can't work in the exact same way as these very long ones? Keeps them hungry & if they become regular 1st team players, then you can offer a better contract. Won't make much difference to any perceived transfer value they would have.
I think that Les may be able to multi-task, and that he has a team of people handling all things recruitment and retention. My missus likes watching footie, but admits she is clueless. She came with me to the Boro game (I know how to give a woman a good time) and she said she'd enjoyed it (she lies) but that we "needed someone to kick into the goal". Now if she can see that, I would venture that Les has noticed too. If there was an easy solution we'd have found it by now. Trust in the man. I'm pleased to see these kids getting contracts. It's what Southampton do.
