Taylor never recovered from 'The Sun's' cruel headline in the wake of his England team losing to Sweden.

    SWEDES 2 TURNIPS 1

His Watford team of the late '70's early '80's, however, was a joy to behold. RIP. <peacedove> <rose>

His Watford teams were very close rivals of the Swans in the Toshack era, rising through the Leagues almost in tandem either us.

    RIP <rose>

    Really sad news.

Must admit, used to enjoy Taylor's analysis as co-commentator on 5live. Really interesting & knowledgeable chap, who loved the game so much. Came across as so humble & likeable, wasn't much he didn't know about the game too...

I used to think it was incredible that this was the same guy that was crucified by the press, back in the day..

    RIP Mr. Taylor.

I always felt Taylor was too nice a person to be involved in football.
He was one of the very few pundits that I could listen to.
I don't listen to ANY of them now.

I recall one game at The Vetch, which ended 1-3 in Watford's favour They were terrific, ripping The Swans' to pieces. Taylor had created a great side.

Yep - and that little winger, was it Nigel Callaghan?

Didn't Tosh make his debut as Player-Manager in the 3-3 draw at the Vetch in the old 4th Division? I was on the North Bank with my mates - wonderful days & wonderful memories.

RIP to a "real" football man.

Yes correct, Callaghan had a 'curly perm' sort of mop of hair...

    "wonderful days and wonderful memories".

Indeed they were, Taff. You were part of the rowdy mob then.

    I loved The North Bank..

They were indeed a terrific side, them & Shrewsbury. I always hated the Watford game coming, because whatever good run we'd be on, they always seem to give us a 'tuning'!! Brilliant days to be a Swan though...

Fast, direct, but no less skill, that was Taylor's Watford...

The Swans' fans always appreciated them though. No shame in losing to a better side.

But that Ross Jenkins was a real pain in the ass. <laugh>

Think you are so spot on Vetch!!

We admired them, because Swans' fans have always appreciated a better team. It's where we wanted to be, but no resentment...
Think also we would have been 2 contrasting styles, with us probably playing a little bit with more possession type.

Ross Jenkins was an awesome clinical striker, we feared him big time, rightly so he hurt us so much!!!... haha

I used to work with the then Vice Chairman of The Swans', and we would hold regular discussions re the upcoming games, etc.

Well, a few days prior to the game I referred to earlier, we bumped into each other in the corridor, and I asked him what, if any, plans were in place to deal with Ross Jenkins', his pace and his aerial ability.

"No problem, he's a donkey", was his response.

As it happened, Jenkins played a blinder, scoring two, and creating another. In fact he had been unplayable.

A day or so later, I encountered the VC again, and he was looking very, very, gloomy and subdued,

"Hee Haw, Hee Haw", I said.

He stopped, turned, scowled, and then burst out laughing.

As he walked away, I heard him say "bastard", and to this day I'm not sure who he was referring to, me, or Ross Jenkins.

"Never recovered" to the extent that he took Watford from the 3rd Div. to the Premier League AGAIN in 2 seasons in 97-99...

Vic, I suspect that Vetch was referring to the cruel jibes and the "permanency" of the headline rather than any failure to recover in the true footballing sense.

As I think you can determine from the previous postings on this thread, there is clear and obvious respect and admiration for Graham Taylor and for what he achieved, particularly at Watford.<ok>
