It's funny. I had no idea I was getting a 5 year bonus, when I found out I got excited. Then I checked my pay cheque online and found out how much it was. <laugh>

I get my annual bonus in about a month or so when the fiscal year rolls over too. It's usually only a few hundred... But that's better than nothing I guess. I've never worked anywhere that did big bonuses.

My first company used to give out a $25 grocery store gift card each Christmas. <laugh>. That WAS the Xmas bonus.

Many years ago I managed a division that had a record year. The sales guys were on 12k + a ****ty commission plan. I always felt guilty about their basic salaries and thought that as we'd made a tonne of money I'd be able to get them a few grand more. Went in to see the board director I reported to and he agreed that they'd done well and deserved to be rewarded. He said they could have a 4% increase.

That was a difficult conversation to have with them!

Director was making around £600k a year. He was thick, got his job purely because of a personal relationship with the Chairman.

I ran a site that was run by a company who had that mindset once. I started there and they gave everyone their pay plans for the following year in December (including mine) based on profit objectives. End of Q1 we smashed the budgets, so they issued another set of pay plans with targets adjusted up and no incremental carrot. By the end of the year we'd have 4 pay plans with 4 budget increases, we'd doubled the original objectives and made a 7 figure net profit and our 'reward' for this was to earn not a penny more than we'd have got if we delivered the original one.........

So I told them to stick it up their ****ing arse, as did most of the key staff, and within 2 years the same site was making a loss. Greed and short sightedness.

In the City in the old days they used to at least stick the thick, clueless offspring of the partners into the back office where they could do only minimal damage.

I've seriously met Old Etonians and supposed Oxbridge graduates who'd struggle to tie their own shoelaces!

    Its sad isn't it.
Degrees mean **** all these days to be honest.
It's no guarantee of earning ability when you hit the job market at all, unless you have will power, ambition and a degree of ruthlessness.

I think I have mentioned it before, but one of my team has a degree, and is 10 years older then me, and yet I am his boss and earn close to twice what he does. And I don't say that in a bragging way, because I don't earn HUGE bucks by any means.
But it is slightly ridiculous that he spent 4 years at Uni and got himself £30,000 into debt for **** all.
