Tonight PNE continue their pre season friendly trip to Scotland when they take on Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.
Kilmarnock play in the Scottish Prem league and will be another step up the ladder for PNE in terms of the opponent quality.
PB has indicated that PNE will have a stronger (arguably) team out which may include Hume/Treacy/Ashbee/Coutts etc. Trialist's Mills/Cooper/McLean/Lucas should also be playing and trying to influence the manager in his decisions whether to offer them contracts. So then lots of interest surrounding this pre season fixture. Let's hope that PNE can give a good account of themselves and maintain their unbeaten record.

PNE team and subs : Arestidou, McLaughlin, Cooper, Carlisle, Devine, Barton, Coutts, Hume, Mellor, Nicholson, Treacy.
Subs: Wright, Comrie, Mayor, Clucas, Miller, McLean, Parry, Middleton.

Morgan was named in the team but Devine replaced him. Maybe injured in warm up.

PNE conceded yet another goal inside the first minute and despite having more of the play, go in 1-0 down at half time.

Neil Mellor’s first goal of the pre-season campaign earned Preston North End a deserved draw against Scottish Premier League side Kilmarnock on Monday night.
The striker, back from a year’s loan at Sheffield Wednesday, struck in the 49th minute at Rugby Park after captalising on a mistake in the Killie defence.
It cancelled out an early opener from their Ayrshire hosts in what was PNE’s most competitive friendly outing of the summer so far.

Result : Kilmarnock 1 PNE 1

Attendance: 1,743

I wasn't around to follow PNE's trip to Kendal last night, but have now read one or two comments about the game.

Opinions are fairly unanimous that the PNE young players in the team did themselves credit (again), and even allowing for the fact that the opposition were none league etc, it was a very creditable performance put in by the Lilywhites.
A score of 7-1 away from Deepdale is not to be sniffed at regardless of the opposition so well done to all of the players who took part.
As Fineyfan comments above Proctor has to be pushing very hard for a first team place when the season commences, and he may well not be the only PNE young player to have impressed PB. Proctor could be the striker home produced that follows in the footsteps of Gemson and Robinson who fires the imagination for all the PNE supporters, of course he has yet to do the business in the league but the signs are there that he can and will.
Barton is another who shows great potential and if PNE can keep hold of him then he could make a massive impact in the centre of midfield this coming season.
Things are looking quite good without getting carried away with the pre season results thus far, but there are still the outstanding issues of finding a left back (maybe we have with Mills/Cooper) and last but by no means least is the keeper saga. The Goalkeeping issue is giving cause for concern (or should be) as at this point in time we supporters have no idea who will be in the nets when the season kicks off, last night it was Carroll's turn to try and impress the manager.
All in all then a very good result last night for PNE and in particular for the young players in the team.

Today is The LFA Senior Cup Final Day, the day that PNE meet Blackburn Rovers at the County ground Leyand.....KO 3.0 pm

Of course this Final tie falls right in the middle of PNE's pre season friendly fixtures, but any game between these two Lancs rivals can be classed as more than a friendly. Intense pride is at stake between both teams and their supporters. The Rovers are one week behind PNE in their pre season fitness programme but whether this will have any bearing on the game is any one's guess.
Now it is nearer to the business end of the pre season fixtures PB will be looking at selecting a team with the coming new season in mind, so supporters may begin to see what the new season starting 11 is likely to be. Having said that PNE still have the keeper and leftback positions to resolve etc, so there is still room for change. It will be interesting what starting 11 PB selects to start this cup Final, he will be hoping for a win that is for sure, we will see.

Teams :

PNE: Carroll, McLaughlin, James, McLean, Carlisle, Barton, Coutts, Hume, Mellor, Nicholson, Treacy.
Subs: Devine, Comrie, Middleton, Proctor, Mayor.

ROVERS: Urwin, Ramm, Hamley, Cotton, Gunning, Pearson, Evans, Knowles, Osawe, Hands, McLaren.
Subs: Paul, Dillo, Hall, Edwards.

Referee: Darren Handley

At the end of ninety minutes the score was level 1-1 no extra time involved the game going straight to penalties. Rovers Win the Final 3-1 on penalties.

According to the minute by minute match report PNE could and probably should have won this game in the 90 min period. The ref didn't endear himself to the Northend fans by making some dubious decisions.

For me the biggest debating point would have to be, did PB do the right thing in not playing the players that got the team to the final ?????.
Rovers for their part fielded a very young team who I suspect played in the rounds prior to the Cup Final and got their reward y winning the game. PNE had a team out that was comprised of mainly senior players and two players on trial etc, it seems like PB was treating this game as another friendly and using players who might well be PNE's first 11 when the new season starts. If I was one of the PNE youngsters who had played in the lead up games to this Final I would be pretty upset about things. There are several ways of looking at PB's decision so what do you think ?????. It was an opportunity for PB to take another look at Carroll and McLean but against a very young Rovers team ??? wouldn't have thought he would learn much from today being honest about it. I am sure PB must have been aware that Rovers were fielding a young team. I suppose one question that could be asked is "how would the team of young players who got PNE to the Final have fared today ???".
Again according to the match report Mellor missed two sitters and a penalty as well, one or two comments are now being posted that Mellor showed little interest and did very little to justify his inclusion at Proctors expense. Anyway the unbeaten pre season progress came to a halt today, so plenty for PB to think about IMHO one of the main thoughts being about Mellor.

Well done Rovers...<ok>...<steam>....<laugh>

Tomorrow WED 27/07/11 Morecambe FC are next up in PNE's pre season fixture programme, this game also being a testimonial for Stewart Drummond so hopefully a good gate will ensue. Stewart Drummond has been a terrific servant for the Shrimps, he is also a Prestonian as well.

This game being the next to last one in the above programme will no doubt have more significance than earlier ones, and one assumes that PB will be looking to field a team closely resembling what he sees as the one that starts the season against Colchester. PNE have as yet to sign a new keeper and a left back so it's difficult to predict who might fill these two positions tomorrow night. Of course PNE take on Wigan on Sunday in the final pre season fixture so it is possible that PB may decide to mix and match in the Morecambe game, even using players on trial again. I am sure that the Shrimps will give PNE a stern test so it should be a game worth watching.

Up date for the above...27/07/11

PNE will have yet another keeper in the nets tonight, German giant Thorsten Stuckmann will be between the posts at the Globe Arena after joining North End for training this week. Stuckmann, 30, who stands 6ft 6ins tall, is a free agent after leaving German second division side Alemannia Aachen.
"But PNE boss Brown insists bringing Iain Turner back to Deepdale to fill the first-choice keeper’s vacancy remains his priority".
Brown has also stated that he is only looking at signing ONE keeper who will replace Lonners with the two young PNE keepers in reserve.
The Keeper and leftback positions need to be resolved as quickly as possible with the new season now just round the corner, and with the departure of Lonners freeing up the wages situation there can be little excuse now for not sorting things out.

Another trialist who will be on show in tonight’s game is former Manchester City and Burnley left-back Stephen Jordan.
The 29-year-old is training with PNE for a second time after having a short trial spell at Deepdale last season.

Cooper the young ex Liverpool player is still training with PNE so he is not out of the equation as yet, but it would appear that Mills hasn't done enough to impress manager Phil Brown.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tonight's teams :

No less than 6 trialists are in action for PNE tonight.

PNE TEAM : Only Paul Coutts remains from the North End side that faced Rovers.

Lucas, Leather, Jordan, Miller, Devine, Wright, Coutts, Linganzi, Proctor, Oper, Daley.
Subs: Stuckman, Mayor, Middleton, Osobe, James.

MORECAMBE TEAM : Morecambe: Roche, Charnock, Wilson, Drummond, Fenton, Haining, Reid, Hunter, Carlton, Jevons, McDonald.
Subs: Routledge, Parish, Alessandra, McGee, Parkinson, Culshaw, Breen.

PNE take the lead :
8:19 Daley is the goalscorer, following a great run.

HT at the Globe Arena : Morecambe 0 PNE 1

8.52 Proctor continues his pre season scoring form by putting PNE 2 0 in the lead.

8:56 PNE give penalty away. score remains Morecambe 0 PNE 2

"What a stop by the giant German in the goal for PNE, Jevons put the ball to his right, but Stuckman matched his effort".

9:13 After fun and games in the centre circle the ref has asked for Linganzi to be taken off. (Linganzi had a good first half)
Linganzi is replaced by Reece James.

9:28 GOAL!
Miller scores and increases the PNE lead.
The young man scores another screamer like last week, on the volley on the edge of the box, that came out of nowhere!
All the PNE players mob the youngster, he can surely strike the ball the midfielder from Lostock Hall.

Full time at the Globe Arena, and the PNE youngsters and trialists put in an enthusiastic performance against a hard working Morecambe team.
Proctor continued his very good scoring form and gave a none stop performance. Daley showed that he has one or two tricks up his sleeve and isn't afraid to put his foot in. Stuckman did himself no harm at all and saved a penalty kick. All the squad did well according to the minute by minute match report so with just the one game left against Wigan, PB is going to have to decide fairly quickly who he wants to sign from all the trialists. Several of the young players have shown their mettle as well so pressure is mounting on some of the more senior players.

Well Northenders tomorrow is PNE's last pre season game before the club embarks on a promotion mission to attempt getting back to the Championship at the first attempt.

Wigan are tomorrows opposition and will be a far tougher nut to crack than the ones PNE have encountered in their previous games. Rivalry between the two clubs should ensure a bit of needle is present in the way the players and fans approach this game. On the other hand neither team will be wanting to lose players due to injury etc, so common sense will be required as well.

For Northend supporters they will be looking at Phil Brown's team selection with interest as it is almost certain that PB will be selecting what he thinks the new season starting 11 will be. I should add that at this point in time PNE are still short of a natural left back and have still got players on trial attempting to gain a contract with the club. One position that has now been addressed is the goalkeeping position as Ian Turner has at last signed on the dotted line.
Even though PB has maintained that Hume and Mellor are the two first choice strikers, rumours persist that Mellor could still leave the club with the PNE fans split on whether this would be a good thing or bad thing. Mellor has not impressed in the pre season games, unlike young Proctor who has been scoring for fun, and many PNE fans think that Proctor and Hume should be first choice for the opening league fixture.

The new season is just around the corner now, so tomorrows fixture against Wigan is important and although still a friendly It's PB's last opportunity to see if his pre season fitness programme and team selection/tactics have been successful. Phil Brown did say that he wanted to hit the first game up and running etc, but has been hampered by players leaving and financial constraints delaying players coming in. From what I can see there is still work to be done before PB knows what his full squad is going to be, it does need sorting out on an urgent basis though. PNE need to get off to a flying start when the season starts for real.

Always been a bit of a Mellor fan but I believe the adage if they're good enough they're old enough and young Proctor is on fire so I'd be happy to see him leading the line in the first real game. We probable need Mellor off the books to release money for one or two new players.
We have players like Turner, Carlisle and bazza that really want to play for our club and that's the sort of player we need this season, if, as rumoured Mellor really doesn't want to be here then get rid. If he is happy here then I'm sure he will be an asset at this level over hte course of a full season
