Following on from Comms thread about what grounds we have all visited, was wondering on peoples stories from their first ever away game. Particuarly interested in older posters stories of games in 70's & 80's with me being a young'un My first away game was a League Cup 3rd round tie at Ashton Gate under Strachan, so must have been around 2002/2003. We won 3-0 with goals from Beattie, Ormerod and can't remember the other. e arrived around 5/10 minutes into the game having left Southampton at quarter past 5, and when arriving finding it strange that it was unreserved seating! I was thinking how the **** am I gonna see anything, until a steward told me to just to stand on a wall at the back of the stand Was a great night though "YEELLLOOWWWSSS!!" Miss having yellow away kit
First away game to Spurs in the 80's. Finished 0-0 and we got mugged in McDonalds near Seven Sisters after the game. Memorable
Just found bbc report of mine, was 2003 and Le Saux scored the other goal http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/league_cup/3204811.stm
First away game was also my first ever game. Lost 3-0 to Bolton at Burnden Park. Remember it quite well in that I sat in the Lever end and the goals were scored by Frank Worthington and Alan Gowling. Worthington got two. He was a proper wide boy, cracking player in an old school piss head type way.
I did was City Ground but it wasn't Liverpool playing. It was Forest v Derby, the game where Van Hooijdonk made his return after going AWOL. He scored a freekick and no one celebrated with him Good game in the end, finished 2-2
My biggest regret is never being to a game . I'm surrounded where I live with lots of opportunity to watch professional hockey ,baseball and American football and never go . Oh well , TV and streaming is all I can do so no sense crying about it I guess . If I was born in Great Britain I would be one of those guys that can't afford season tickets but have them and the guy looking all scruffy at away games that people veer around .... but I'd be happy .
No suprises mine was in mag land, home of the orcs and now infamous horse punchers. It was around xmas time, so lovely and sunny (not). My first visit to Sid James bigtop. 816,000 screaming jawdees. I was only a young un, went with my dad and some of his mates (all miners). Didnt really know what was going on, it was all a bit mental. I know we got beat 2-0.
Bristol City Chelsea in 70s. My Uncle was City's dentist! Can't really remember it though. First game I properly remember Fulham away 76/7
I went to Bolton when Peter Reid played for them probably a bit after Worthington. Bet you guys took a lot of fans to Bolton those days
That's not something I especially remember, I was only seven I think. The Lever End was seated behind the goal. The away terrace standing area was at the opposite end. You ever seen LS Lowry's 'Going to The Match'? Well, that stand was the Lever End. Although it had a roof on by the time I went.
Franky Wortho was my favourite Leicester City player as a lad .. my old man preferred Keith Weller First away game would have been early 70s FA Cup semi final loss to Liverpool at Villa park (just a young lad) ... first with my mates around 1976/77 .. Ipswich ...
First away game was at Upton Park around 86/87. Great little ground with a brilliant atmosphere. Remember everybody singing a song about Jimmy Hill's chin as he climbed down the ladder from the temporary TV studio. He turned to the crowd and gave his chin a stroke, good banter.
First away game was 1981 fa cup semi final replay at Highbury when I was 14. Great match...won 3 nil. Went to lots of matches at whl and with a qpr mate to loftus road but rarely travelled away cos of the fighting. There was a lot of racist **** in the early 80s and being mixed Asian and Caribbean made things a bit scarey tbh. Was never able to see the point in fighting over football but those days you would be singled out for dogs abuse and a beating by racist scum
I was on holiday in Devon when I was 14. My dad took me to watch us v Plymouth in the old 2nd division. It was kicking off all day.
