That's what I think. iirc Danny Gosling came from Everton roughly the same time and after flopping at the Mags he went to a lower league playing regularly and is not a bad premier player now for Bournemouth. I think Rodwell needs regular game time to get his match sharpness and self belief back - but at £60k pw- ---- horrific Could well be a Maggie Byrne legacy
He's the only player bought before the clauses were made policy to not have signed a new contract since.
Aye true on both counts! If Cattermole had been fully fit we'd have made a much better first of this season. He seems to drive players on when he's playing. Captain in all but armband! Just a pity he misses more than he plays
Niall Quinn put those clauses in when he was there and recommended that Short make them policy. I remember reading about it when he was chairman. He wasn't bought in the Niall Quinn days was he?
He was a Poyet/Congerton signing. I heard Congerton made it compulsory half way though his time here. I'd dare bet it was Rodwell's who pushed the policy over the line before that it was for some and not all as i understand.
I thought it was written into every contract at our gaff, since Quinn was chairman.... clearly a major lapse in policy at the top. One for Maggy, then.
Thing is it's not his fault he's injury prone - some players just are! I think he'll be a good midfielder in the championship if he can stay fit for more than 3 games at a time!! Massive IF though!!
I think his a pussy pal. I think dick said something like he could play with abit pain but the lad didn't want to.
Yeah but Cattermole did that then missed 6 weeks due to aggravating abdominal muscles! If it's a niggling "impact" injury then I would expect any professional to play - if it's a slight muscle strain, I certainly wouldn't. As I say, if he stays fit, he'll be an asset in the championship
NDong and Cattermole are both better than him (in my opinion) but with your current players (and there's likely to be a lot of change in this) I would go 3-5-2 and dominate midfield. We went up at a struggle as we often found ourselves over-run in midfield and gained promotion through our defenders being able to hold off opposition strikers combined with more flashes of quality than our opponents - we rarely ever actually outplayed them. Jones at LB has actually impressed me second half of the season (comparative to most of your team), I would have just had him down as a donkey previously. Watmore on the right and with three across the middle and I think you'd look good. The main question is over how many of those players are going to be with you next year, people talk a lot about Pickford but NDong and Watmore are (in my view) as important as the onus is going to be on you to go and get results and you wont have Defoe.
Spot on, and a good point about the formation imo. We were playing a form of 3/5/2 at times last season and before under Big Sam and it suited some players but not all, mainly due to Moyes who rigidly stuck to playing three up front with Defoe leading the line, even though our " wide" players were hopeless all season. As for Rodders I suggested moons ago to give him a run out with the u21's at center back and see how it goes with a view to introducing him into the first team, but he is a paper tiger and more concerned with lifestyle than football, he is not the only one of course, but to me he looks a dead weight. Someone (apologies if it was yourself) asked the other day if we would swap him for "The Ginger Perlo" my answer would have been I'd swap him for a ginger perm but not if Jack the Rat was sporting it. . PS the last decent player we got from up the road was Bobby Moncur who groomed Jeff Clark who eventually went the other way, this was a rare case of mutual benefit, otherwise we usually lose out big time.
