David Davis on BBC Radio 4 said they had been very clear that they would seek "a free trade agreement with an associated customs agreement" from the European Union.

So this sounds as if the UK hopes to stay and choose the bits it cannot live without, but do it purely on the terms it sets. The weakness of it's position doesn't seem to have sunk in yet.

Silly David Davis expecting the EU to take a sensible logical approach, doesn't he know the survival of the EU is more important than anything else!!

Of course you are right, 27 countries are far more important to the EU, than one that wishes to leave. I would be worried if that was not the case.

From all the information I saw were not the EU financing the remaining side so for one side to call foul on the other is a bit of political stupidity.

The eurocrats wish to avoid contagion is far more important to the project than a sensible financial agreement which benefits both sides.

To be honest, that's the first I've heard of that. Any links?

David Davis, Oliver Robbins, Tim Barrow and Sarah Healey are the four people that will be sitting down to try and sort out a deal with their four EU counterparts. Why does May keep trying to create the impression that she will be there leading these negotiations? Will Davis be wired up so he can receive his orders?

The face to face negotiators on both sides are just foot soldiers who will report back to their masters who will make decisions. I'm sure most of the main guidance on the UK side will come from the PM.

I think you are probably wrong.

There will be a bevy of advisers, number crunchers and lawyers who will all write reports and give briefings. It would be folly for one person to be immersed in any detail in this.... as well as being the PM.....

You are basically agreeing to my statement. The final decisions will be taken by the most senior officials with the PM being ours.

    Not actually...

You intimate that Teresa May is the best person to lead for the UK etc. She will be the front person no doubt..... but the hard bargaining detail will be done by others.

That is how it works in politics.....

The PM will take the major decisions, that is how it works in politics.

I think you are splitting hairs SH and playing with words

Brexit is the biggest thing to hit this country probably since WW2. One person cannot expect be expected to be the master of it.

I was involved in some diplomacy when I worked in South Asia, I was the consular correspondent for Bhutan where i worked, and was in the Embassy in Delhi on the day of the India-Pakistan crisis in 1990 and spent an hour with the first secretary political whose job was to brief the Ambassador whose job was to brief the Foreign secretary whose job was to brief the cabinet. I had a great insight into the making of decisions that went right to the top of Government.
