I read today that Poland are to seek compensation for German atrocities during WWII. I also spoke today to a customer who had a relative that fought for the Free Russian Army in the Siege of Leningrad. He said that the Russians were so hungry some of them ate rats.
I also remember speaking to a Feyenoord supporter a few years ago and they hate the Germans for bombing the **** out of their city, Rotterdam, during WWII. I guess a few English fans could dislike them as well
People need to move on. It finished 72 years ago FFS. The lessons of these historic events seem to be slowly being forgotten by the current generation.
It appears that the Germans have paid millions in the way of compensation but not to the Poles.....for several reasons it seems. Germany is a financial powerhouse again, maybe it is time once and for all to make reparations in the form of money for all the deaths they caused? Or maybe the Germans will find some way around it by offering some kind of trading concessions to the Poles via the EU? I cant see the Germans just coughing up billions of Euros.
The better approach would be to look forward. Should the people of Germany today bear the price for their grandfathers and great grandfathers? As Vic Reeves used to say "you wouldn't let it lie".
I guess there are two sides to the story, should the Germans pay or should the Poles let it lie? I feel quite sorry for the Poles, it couldn't have been nice being stuck geographically in the middle of the Germans and the Russians.
For at least the last 30 years it's been just fine. How far back should reparations go? What do we owe to half of Africa, indigenous Australians, Maoris, native Americans, countries in the Middle East, etc, etc, etc, etc.?
Totally agree. Too many people expected to apologise for things they weren't involved in. Why should modern day Germany apologise to Poland or indeed anyone for what happened almost 80 years ago never mind pay compensation. What occurred during the WW's should never be forgotten but the next thing we'll get is cold calling at 8pm telling us to forget PPI claims as the "in" compensation claim is WW2 claims and asking if we were injured or not.
Yes indeed but in the case of Poland the above argument answers nothing because the Poles had nowt to do with any of what went on in other countries or continents. I can see this one running for a while, the anniversary of the Warsaw Rising is approaching, that's probably why its being 'showcased' like this. Maybe the Poles are skint, who knows, and that's me being cynical. Maybe there is an election due and someone wants to garner support? Or maybe, after all these years, the Poles feel they have a genuine case? Who knows?
Wow that is pretty full on. I don't agree with it. It was terrible what happened but we should all work to move forward together.
Ive been to Poland dozens of times through work. The Poles don't hate the Germans, their hatred is for the Russians. They massacred 22000 polish soldiers in woods at Katyn and blamed the Germans. They only admitted it a few years ago.
