A very sad article in today's Sun about Dave Thomas, the only ex-footballer with a guide dog. Remembering him in his heyday it would bring a tear to the eye. He's invited to our match against Brighton, I'm sure it will be another emotional day for one of our greats... https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/2817830/dave-thomas-guide-dog-qpr-burnley/
That's a real shame. DT was one of the first players I remember seeing at LR and in my top 11 all time Rs. A devil to defend against and quick.
I had to laugh at his comment about Raheem Sterling, "he couldn't cross the road, let alone a football!"...
I believe his very best years were spent at Loftus Road, not at Goodison as the article stated, but then again he was good wherever he went. Great memories, a real character
love you davie, really love you, hope you can somehow save some of your vision some of your wing play was sensational,i loved it when you used to cross the ball when at full speed absolutely idolised you and as i was a right winger i used to let my socks hang around my ankles without any shin pads please please please if there is a god in heaven lets hope this man can keep some of his vision
One of my favourite all time players. I'm going to the Brighton game just to show him my appreciation.
I can still remember the excitement in my belly everytime he got the ball. He should have gotten far more than 8 caps can't think of a better winger in the country at the time.
One of my boyhood early memories was watching Dave Thomas tearing down the wings with Gillard struggling to keep up with him. Made a donation to the just giving page, I encourage others to do the same.
When I was ten years old a man who lived upstairs from us who worked at QPR took me and my mate to see QPR train at the West London Stadium. It was during the 1975/76 season, we also got to do a few laps of the track with the squad. Afterwards Dave Thomas took us to the canteen and bought us a coke and crisps while he had a lemon tea. Top bloke is Dave. My neighbour who lives opposite me played golf with him regularly. I'll have to ask him if he was one of his ball spotters as mentioned in that article.
Donated to the cause with absolute pleasure.. a legend... from an era when the word actually meant something...
He played for Pompey between 1982-84, in his early thirties. He was brilliant then still. A classy talented winger.
A true legend and great that DT has been given a new lease of life with his guide dog.......... One of the finest sights in football was Dave flying down the wing, socks around his ankles, leaving full backs standing.....those of us old enough to have seen him in action were blessed......... .....and he can still play golf off 9 handicap.......
165k we paid. Remember getting home from school and reading it in the Standard. He was not only a good attacking winger but used to work so hard tracking back. Fast forward many years later and was with the wife and boys at Butlins at Bognor Regis. Dave was running the football school for them and he was smashing. Think he was actually player manager at Bognor at the time. Wish him all the best.
An update from Sky Soccer Saturday. For those of us - most of us on here I'd guess - who remember the sheer exhilaration in seeing him belt down the wing in his pomp it's a sad watch. I wasn't planning on a home game this season but like Col I'll make a point of going on April 8th. http://www.skysports.com/watch/vide...72402/thomas-grateful-for-fundraising-support
Shame he hasn't been able to get to some more games this season, he could have lent his dog to some of the referees that have officiated at some of our matches!
Really sad to read this, a pivotal member of that brilliant seventies side the likes of which we will never see again. I, as I'm sure we all do, wish him well in coping with the obstacles of life that lay ahead.
