The closest anything has come to dampening the FA Cup winning warm glow is the appointment of Coyle. Was good to see so many of the players trying to get behind him on twitter - be interesting to see if they have secretly instructed their agents to step up searches for new clubs. It'll take a good start to the season to get the supporters on board. Ironic really, since many clubs that get promoted seem to come from mid table with a late burst in the Championship.
Coyle's managerial career as you probably are aware, has not been marked with great success. Perhaps it is significant that his win percentage in the 4 clubs he has managed, deteriorated steadily, until it slumped to only 33% at Bolton. Yet, according to him, he has repeatedly turned down managerial offers since leaving 7 months ago, 'waiting for the right job' OK, so he said 'No' to Bolton School (Girls Division), Darwen Rangers JFC (respect!) and St.Trinians, but at least Dave Whelan chose him ahead of McClaren, which is a positive. It takes more than a good manager to climb out of the Championship, however, so I wish Wigan FC and the many supporters luck in their ambition.
His news conference was quite reassuring, but suppose it matters what happens results wise, if he can persuade some of our top players to stay and add a few more faces I'll be confident he can do a good job here.
