So Lee's been spouting off, 'cos nothing was his fault... “The 2015/16 season was extremely disappointing,” said Charnley. “Significant sums of money were spent to strengthen the squad. In the context of this spend, relegation was unacceptable and totally unexpected." Forgetting that he had not only kept faith with John Carver, but then employed Schteve, Charnley goes on to say... “The financial impact of relegation is difficult to overstate and this will become evident in our next set of financial results ending June 2017. Our approach following relegation was to make further sizeable investment in our playing squad and our annual wage bill is still above many current Premier League teams." Reading betwixt the lines, there ain't a lot available in the Summer - a truly frightening prospect. Pulling Ashley's bellend from his mouth, Charnley then says... “Whilst not without financial risks, this strategy was adopted in order to maximise our chances of promotion and was only made possible by the cash injection of our owner.” I don't quite follow any of this. Parachute payments, net profit on player sales from last Summer, new sponsor pending and the fact the fat one owns the fecking thing.....just sounds like a "we'll strive to be the best we can be, pound for pound" comment again. Two wins from promotion and, in true Cashley style, the club tries its very best to dampen positivity and quash ambition. "We may be going up, but don't for one second think we're going to be ambitious you stupid geordie feckers. Oh, don't forget to buy the new kit, sponsored by Poundland, a quality sponsor who really represent our brand. PS. Nine will be closed and replaced with a Poundland/Sports Direct shop."
I'm taking a watching brief. Mike is a canny negotiator and I wouldn't put it past him to get Charnley to spout this **** to help negotiations with players.... If he came out and said we have loads of cash to strengthen then that will inevitably drive the price up for targets... and wages... as well as make one of two of our better players get their begging bowls out. Don't forget we have recently lost or will lose some big earners off the wage bill in the summer so there are upsides too.
The man who bets on us to lose and forecasts us to lose each game pretending it's "insurance" bets and "reverse" logic is an optimist?
I think I'll enjoy the rest of this season before worrying about the summer activities and next season. One day at a Time....
I think its more about not putting selling clubs on alert that we are looking to buy. Ashley is stupid, but he ain't stupid enough to piss Rafa off by not supporting squad strengthening to the point where he walks. If we don't strengthen we'll be straight back down, and by strengthen I mean bringing player in better than the ones we've got....not just swapping old for new, or expensive for cheaper etc etc.
You have to admit someone of my age wearing Mustard Chinos would be so wrong, so I'll stick with the Beige Tweed if you don't mind. That said, it doesn't seem to bother Albert...
I'll be lumping on relegation as my insurance bet, plus a mackems up with Villa and us down prediction.
It will for me because it will ensure that, should we drop again... it's not all bad because I'll win a sack of cash as a small consolation. For me it's a case of: Option 1- we stay up (ideal scenario) Option 2- relegated with no bet (worst scenario) Option 3- relegated and I win money (better than option 2)
I get that; I meant that relegation is all but assured if we end up spending all Summer on another Vurnon Anita.
Plus, when he goes out to the bookies, I get to pop round to place my own bet on Mrs Chip Shop. Everyone is happy.
