Burnley release captain Graham Alexander

    Burnley skipper Graham Alexander has been released by the club after the final year of his contract was torn up by mutual consent.

    The 39-year-old veteran is just the second outfield player to reach 1,000 appearances in England football. He move to Turf Moor from Preston in August 2007.

    The former Scotland international's career started more than two decades agom at Scunthorpe in 1990.

    He made 197 appearances for the Iron before joining Luton Town in 1995, and Preston four years later.

    He was part of the team that secured Premier League football for Burnley in May 2009 and made 141 appearances for the Clarets.

    Despite having 12 months left on his current deal he leaves early have been the only professional on Burnley's books not to have started a game under new boss Eddie Howe, who is seven years his junior.

    Howe had claimed that Alexander was part of his plans for the new Championship season.
