Britain and Germany will be the only European economies in the world’s top eight by 2030, experts say today.

While the UK slipped below France in the past year, it will draw level again by 2021 and overtake it soon afterwards, according to the Centre for Economics and Business Research.

Britain is currently in sixth place in the list of the largest economies in the world and while it will slip to eighth by 2030, France and Italy will fall out of the elite group completely, the CEBR said.

It predicted that China will overtake the US to take the top spot, while Brazil and South Korea will also rise in the international league table.

The report will pile pressure on Theresa May to secure strong trade deals with more distant nations after the UK leaves the EU.

The latest trade figures show British exports soared to a record high of £26.8billion in October – up 8.7 per cent on the previous month and 17.9 per cent on a year earlier. Most of this increase came from outside the EU.

    BRITISH BOSSES CONFIDENT ON GROWTH
BUSINESS leaders go into the new year bullish about their firms’ prospects after Brexit, a major survey has found.

More than 60 per cent of members of the Institute of Directors said they were optimistic or very optimistic about how their company will perform in 2017 – a month after the referendum, the figure was just 46 per cent.

Many of the Institute’s 34,000 members, predominantly small businesses, said they now expected higher revenue and more profitability, despite warnings from Remain campaigners that UK firms would suffer if we voted to leave.

Simon Walker, director general of the IoD, said: ‘Businesses are becoming used to uncertainty, and while some speculate on what our relationship with Europe might look like in the years to come, employers are getting on with the job of growing their businesses and delivering UK jobs.’

Would you like to live in any of those new budding economies which have been mentioned ? China, South Korea, Brazil etc. It is not all about production. How do you measure the success of a country - through economic figures or through the well being of its population. The EU. has managed to redistribute wealth better than any other economic entity in the World. The EU. contains countries which have the best environmental standards, the best school systems, the best health systems (would you rather be ill in Scandinavia or the USA ?), the highest standards of living, the safest streets, the least inequality, the cleanest air, and the highest standards of democracy in the World. If you had to choose - would you rather live in China, Brazil, South Korea, the USA or in Denmark ? There is more to being a successfull country than simple statistics on production - it may well be that EU. production, as a share of World production, will drop. Possibly because the EU. is taking Co2 reduction seriously which many others are not.

You sound here as if it is your wish to attach yourself to the winning horses of the future - what would the costs of that be for the environment and for all of the other 'good' points I have raised about the EU. What sovereignty is to be gained through TTIP style relationships to countries like China and the USA ?

I, and the majority of voters in the recent referendum, prefer to remain within a sovereign nation which can control its own borders and be responsible for its own laws. We no longer wish to redistribute our wealth, or borrowed funds to be more precise, to inefficient French farmers or former Soviet countries. Many of the benefits you claim for the EU are simply there because it is Europe, not the increasingly undemocratic body that temporarily has control.

The CEBR was just highlighting the major problems of the Euro block which does not redistribute wealth to the poorer nations unlike the states in the USA. You cannot have a common currency without a common fiscal government in charge of a uniform tax regime. This is why it is doomed to fail.

Feb - Oct 1974. Mandate was too difficult and so....second election required.
Oct 1964 - March 1966. Unscheduled, called to increase majority.
    Feb 1950 - Oct. 1951
    May 1929 - Oct. 1931
    Nov. 1922 - Dec. 1923

I won't tax your patience by going back beyond World War 1. All of these were unscheduled elections which were done because the first one provided either an inconclusive result, or, what was considered an insufficient majority (in some cases more than the present government has !).

Sweeping generalisation based on one referendum question which actually did not ask those questions. People voted yes for all sorts of reasons... some completely unconnected from the so called issues

Hang on... answer your own questions first..... this is so facile

I have only ever reacted to your jibes and attempts at being funny. Trace back and you will find that you have belittled or insulted about 10 members on this board (and that also being posters of all shades of opinion). At least 3 have placed you on 'ignore' - when are you finally going to realize that it is not your political opinions which are the problem but your way of arguing. Here is not the place for cheap digs which have no other purpose but to wind up others - but rather a place for interesting debate, which involves reading other people's posts and replying to them.
