For me John Terry edges this role from Tony Adams not so much for the players skill but for their leadership qualities. Both scored crucial goals for their clubs (JT the highest scoring CB in premier history).

I'm sure the players listed all had fantastic players around them which made their roles easier and allowed them to focus on other areas such as leadership etc. Ironically JT & TA were not the most fastest or agile of defenders but their ability to read the game is second to none in my view.

Ps. Try to refrain from slagging off others choices.

For ability only. Wes Brown wins hands down.

Going for the 'full package' then it's Tony Adams

Marcel Desailly and Ledley King belong here. Like everyone else I'll go with my own club player and say Ledley was the best of them all. Imagine if God had given him knees.

Exactly, you got to have watched Ledley the King, whenever he managed a game, to see how he perked the rest up...he used to be wrapped in cotton wool for all the big games...legend

    Injuries wrecked a big career.
Bobby Robson stated that he was the most naturally gifted CB he had ever seen in his career.

Would like to have seen Jaap Stam as an option, as he was individually better than any of those imo. Vincent Kompany should be on the list too.

I've gone with Rio, because he was one half of the best centre half partnership I can remember. Vidic was probably my favourite out of the two, because of who he was but in terms of ability it's Rio when thinking with my head.

That great partnership is very closely followed by John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho.

The poll option for the post only allowed 10 choices, otherwise they would have been included. <ok>

I've gone for JT. Never the quickest but his reading of the game was incredible. He was also a great passer with both feet and his leadership was something else.

    Ok then here's my poll:

    1. Stam
    2. Rio
    3. Vidic
    4. Adams
    5. Kompany
    6. Campbell
    7. Bruce
    8. Alderweireld
    9. Blanc
    10. Desailly

I'd have included some Liverpool ones and the main Chelsea ones but I was only allowed 10 choices.

I would say Stam is best centre half I've seen play for United, ever. This includes Buchan and McGrath, both of whom were brilliant (I can't say I was old enough to judge Martin Buchan really if I'm honest).

I reckon Stam with either Ferdinand or Pallister would have formed a formidable partnership. United goggles set aside for one minute, I genuinely can't see anyone from any other side who could be better.

I would rate Kompany, King, Carvalho, Terry, Adams & Desailly as notable top drawer centre halves.

So hard with all the top drawer centrebacks.

Think i have to put Sol solid Campbell up there.

Just imagine he was one of the mainstays in Wengers defence after the Wenger effect had taken place. Guy was an absolute beast. The only thing you could say about him was that maybe he wasn't as good on the ball as the others.

Stam is deffo up there too
