When I was having a browse around at places I've never been the Wig & Pen came up, which somehow I haven't noticed, even though it's so close to other places we have tried lately. Looks like they are good with their local ales. Oooh, and just found Adam & Eve pub too. God, I'm finding out this year that I've spend too long in the same old places and areas. Another pub crawl soon then!
Yes, it is really nice, but my favourite beer from Oakham has to be Green Devil and both the Queen of Iceni and the Bell sell it at £2.99 for a 500ml bottle.
I never think of buying bottled beer at pubs with so many pumps. But I will try one on your recommendation!
Occasionally they don't have any real ales on tap that I like or I've tasted and not very keen on it, so it's a good way of getting a beer that I'm going to really enjoy and Green Devil is 6% ABV!!
Mate!! That's not keeping it session!! 6%?! Although, I really enjoy the Punk IPA when it's on tap, and that's 5.1%, that's not keeping it session either!
Did you know that the Bell in Naadge was the first Wetherspoons pub outside the M25 web it opened in '93?
Hmm, it seems Green Devil is to beer what the Chip Inn (Long Stratton, in case anyone didn't already know ) is to fried potatoes?
Oh come on Cromer! Who wouldn't know where the Chip Inn is!? I've still not tried Green Devil. At the moment for me it's: Fuller's London Pride Sharp's Doombar Sharp's Atlantic St Austell's Tribute and Brewdog's Punk IPA
Lol, just saw this on twitter and cracked up in hysterics! But do they sell Oakham Green Devil, £2.99, 6.0% ?

Two local chippies battle it out to be the East of England winner - "The region’s other shortlisted chippies are: Burton Road Chippy, Lincolnshire; The Cod’s Scallop’s, Nottinghamshire; The Elite Fish and Chip Company, Lincolnshire; Fishtastic, Peterborough; and Grosvenor Fish Bar, in Norwich." I'm sorry, but I don't get the love for the Grosvenor. Sorry GM, but the Chip Inn (nr Stafford Street) is on the list!!
It's because all of these others are being glorified for having 6 million options that in my book are superfluous to what a chippy should really be judged on. The best Cod or Haddock and chips. I love a skate wing, may even have the odd bit of Rock but more choice, in a more fancily decorated plaice doesn't automatically equal better. With that said, The Cod's scallop's is out standing and the only chippy I've found that is on a par with TCI or SS. Ironically although it's Haddock is fantastic, it is it's variety that is eye catching too. The Monkfish I have now had a few times there is bloomin marvelous. It is nicely decorated also, but it ultimately only got past onevisit because it serves by far and away the best Haddock and chips in the area. I have fish n chips most weeks and since moving to Nottingham I must have tried 20+ chippies because finding the best for something you have weekly is a must (For me anyway). TCS is easily the best I've found in or around Nottingham. Unless I got a duff one, I still don't understand the Grosvenor love in either, bang average haddock and chips there. Bah!
Well, I thought I'd see what all the fuss is about and had my fish and chips from the Grosvenor - NEVER again!!! . The chips were quite good, but I'm not convinced that the fish was properly cooked yet I'd to wait for it. As for the music they play ....... Back to Stafford Street for me next time. At least I've got a pint of Mad Goose in the QoI.
