Shows his true colours. Promised his Queens prize money to the Grenfell fund, so he goes and gets himself knocked out in the first round.:emoticon-0105-wink:

He'll donate at least the equivalent amount of the 1st prize money to the cause, regardless.

For the record I have no doubt that Andy Murray will do the decent thing, whatever he decides that is. But don't you find it just a little ironic that the tournament he puts his hand up for he gets knocked out first round? I wouldn't be surprised if he found it slightly amusing himself.

He's probably nursing a minor injury and conserving his health/energy for the ultimate challenge.

Not in the slightest, sure he puts his hand up regularly, so not sure why he or anyone would find it amusing.

I could say so much but I will summarise:

He got knocked out on purpose solely to piss you off<doh>

The other player had a say in it, they don't just roll over.:emoticon-0148-yes:

    How much have you donated?:headbang:

I think you get my drift.

I know you probably said it in jest, but please try to think before you post. Very bad taste IMO.

    1. He doesn't know me, ludicrous comment. Think before you post.
    2. Murray played poorly, his opponent played well.
    3. Same as you probably.

    You're entitled to your opinion.

Why is it in bad taste?

Its a bloody joke, he's not suggesting Murray threw the game or isn't a charitable person nor does it have any negative connotations with regards to the fire.

Some people just like to take offence, if you don't find it funny then that's entirely up to you, comedy is subjective, however, so is offence and moral taste, just because you think one thing doesn't mean you're right.

I put IMO which it is, IMO.

IMO it wasn't funny and that's why I commented.

I never said I was right.

I don't suppose the former Wimbledon champion Boris Becker will be making a donation, he's been declared bankrupt.

I'm sure Boris will have a little something stashed away in the odd cupboard or two!

From what I've read he's genuinely on his uppers, capital-wise. I'm sure he gets paid more than most posters on here for his TV stuff, etc though so he's unlikely to starve.

    It's only Martin Samuel like...

The one thing Andy Murray did not need right now is additional pressure, so maybe there is rationalisation for his shock first-round exit at the Queen's tournament. It had been revealed he was going to donate any winnings from the competition to the Grenfell Tower fund – £350,000 if he had won outright.

This, as much as the heat or fatigue following his semi-final run in the French Open, might explain his underwhelming performance against unfancied Australian and world number 90, Jordan Thompson.

It wasn't as if Murray sought publicity for his thoroughly decent act. The news leaked elsewhere, and his camp refused to comment. At the very least the fund receives £12,000 and, knowing him, Murray may also donate more privately.

While some of the biggest stars of British sport are ensconced in tax havens – Paula Radcliffe, Chris Froome and Lewis Hamilton, for instance – Murray pays his share at home. He says he could never imagine living abroad for tax reasons. It is what makes him the outstanding British athlete of this generation. It's not just about the tennis.
