To be fair to them, at the time, they'd just been taken over by a billionaire and they all thought they were about to become the next Chelsea...well I assume that's the way it worked at the time. Until Ashley looked at the books and realised he'd bought a complete donkey of a club that were in more **** than a Syrian tourist guide, they probably thought it was party time... Allardyce didn't have the reputation of a party starter, he was a Fireman (Sam). In hindsight, they'd probably have been better off keeping Allardyce and weathering the storm with their heads in the sand for a few years, but they protested, kicked off, probably made things worse.
One of the best coined phrases I've heard on here - good analogy too!! (You missed something out of the last sentence though - they boycoutted as well
Sorry, I just had to laugh at that one. Strangely enough and despite popular myth to this effect the Newcastle fans didn't get Fat Sam sacked. Strangely we don't have that power. It was Ashley. Fat Sam was always a "dead man" walking as no sooner was he appointed then Fred the Sheppard sold the Club to Ashley. Ashley always wanted to put his own man in and the writing was on the wall for Fat Sam from the second Ashley signed the contract to buy the Club. Not too surprising as like managers wanting their own support staff the Owner wanted his own man in as manager. Obviously the fact that the style of "football was hated by the fans made it that much easier for Cashley to sack Fat Sam. As Wij has alluded to football for me and many fans (not just Newcastle) is partly about hope. At that time with Fat Sam it was just about survival and did not give any hope that some success ie winning things would come. Newcastle's problems then ensued from not making the "right" subsequent appointment. I do agree with you on one point though "at Sunderland. We have always watched **** football," Can't argue with that.
At least Penfold and '83 are getting plenty of laughs out of each other, you can't beat a bit of rival banter, done properly
Quote of the century for me this morning am still laughing 12 hours later. I overheard 2 mags talking while travelling to the test match and they were discussing whether "Rafa should go in for Ronaldo or Messi". If it was tongue in cheek I would have smiled and forgot about it but these f**kers were deadly serious
Let's see how good a relegation it was in a few years time when they've maybe lost a few play offs and are still stuck there. We know it's a hard league to get out of, Boro know it too. One first time bounce back from relegation seems to made Newcastle fans forget.
I hope they do bounce back, the region needs three premiership clubs, the support for all three deserves no less, you never know even Woy might visit once in a while, now there is a boost to our tourist industry for starters.
Not sure why you seem to be including MIddlesbrough in that? They have ****e support. They don't deserve the Premiership.
100% agreed! I feel sorry for Gibson though. He put his heart, soul and wallet into that club and the fans have been utter ****. He deserves PL football, they don't.
Yeah, agreed I think you'll be hard pushed for somebody to have a bad word about him. Well respected man, he has poured his heart and money into that club.
