Seven years ago today, Fulham drew 1-1 with Roma in the Europa Cup. The game was not without drama and Henry Winter of The Telegraph summed up events with his usual brilliance in the headline to his match report:

"So near and yet so farcical. This was so nearly a famous victory for Fulham, their inspirational manager Roy Hodgson and their wonderful fans, who had Craven Cottage rocking on its ancient riverside foundations."

Centre stage was one, John Arne Riise. However, the villain of the piece was not one but two officials. With Fulham leading 1-0 from a Brede Hangeland header and despite the help of an additional assistant, stationed behind the goal, referee Paul Allaerts awarded a very soft penalty when Riise tumbled beneath an innocuous challenge from Stephen Kelly in the 76th minute. He then showed a red card to the wrong player. Allaerts dismissed Hangeland and only realised his mistake when a crowd of Fulham players successfully persuaded him that he had picked the wrong player.

That wasn't the end of the theatre though. Mark Schwarzer produced a brilliant save of Jeremy Menez's spot kick. But Roma stole the points when Marco Andreolli ghosted in unmarked at the far post to thump the ball in off John Pantsil's head, with the last kick of the match.

    The team that day was:

Schwarzer, Kelly, Hangeland, Hughes, Konchesky (Pantsil), Riise (the other) (Duff), Greening, Baird, Gera, Zamora (Nevland), Kamara.

Subs not used: Stockdale, Dempsey, Smalling, Anderson
