Cultural colonisation - assault by television. It can only get worse. Some of us will be saying diapers next.
Calling it a "Prom" might be American but I know some schools in the UK had "leavers balls" for a long time. I know both my parents both had "leavers balls" in England. (Or some variation of that name). Proms in the US actually started with exclusive private schools in the US and they got the idea from balls held in schools in the UK. So it has gone full circle. Certainly the trashy over the top aspect is American. There again I was reading about Primary School Proms in England last year... So England has stepped up the tackiness one step further. I await to see how America will respond and make this more repulsive.
Even I don't say diaper and I've been here 2 decades. Would have to be a right numpty to say "diapers" over there.
It's like Halloween. Started as a Scottish tradition, America made it into an over-the-top to do and sent it back to Britain. Or Saint Patrick's day. Or Cinco De Mayo in regards to Mexico.
Leavers balls, I have just read started in the UK in the 70's. Missed me then, although I went to a single sex school so it would have been a bit odd. Actually totally unaware of them until our boys left senior school which by then had a co-ed sixth form.
My parents would have been in high school in the 60's so they're older than that. (One of my parents it was called something else. I don't remember what my mum says hers was called.)
Mexico kicked France's arse in a battle and the US celebrates it on May 5th. Was a minor celebration in one small part of Mexico, but America has turned it into some "let's drink crappy Mexican, beer eat tacos and get drunk" thing. (St. Pat's only Mexican instead of Irish). Now it's apparently slowly becoming a thing in Mexican communities and Mexico.
So the Mexicans took mayonnaise off France... die the French meekly surrender and was this down new or leans way or what.
If I remember my history correctly (and I probably don't), Mexico was deeply in debt to many European countries, one was France. And so they sent an army to Mexico to collect it (I think Britain and a few other countries were backing France for a short period of time in this). Anyhow France decided they wanted to do more than collect debt, they wanted to set up puppet government, other Europeans countries backed out at that point. France tried to invade Mexico and got their butts kicked. (Despite Mexico not really having much of an armed forces). This was 18something.
Tested this at work with some of the younger staff They loved the band name Personally i never heard of it sounded like a mix of depeche mode and any number of rock bands Cheers though
