Players will still want their breathers and customary rolling around. That 30 minutes will just start to get stretched too?

Problem with the handball rule is intent. That's always going to be subjective.

One ref decides it was deliberate, the next says accidental.

Trouble with that though is with 'playing time' being around 25 mins out of 45 allocated, with stoppages for a 45 min half, each half would take around 1h 5mins to complete.

Top 2 points sound good..I don't get the passing to yourself bit. Football is a team game..it's about bringing the team into play or using your own skill. Tapping it to a side to whack it at goal is just the same as putting it where you want for a FK. Next people will debate whether we can throw it to ourselves during a throw in. Like you say, stupidness for the sake of it.

Then surely almost everything in football is objective - one man's foul is another man's "gone down to easily". So lets just stick to everything that is either 100% yes or no - like goal-line technology and possibly offsides... Same with handball. I doubt many players actually deliberately handball it!

Time wasting should be easy to ref. They have something like 7 seconds to restart play - like when a keeper has the ball in hand - or they get a warning

Although they lose much more time when things like setting up a free-kick just outside the box and penalties!

This rule just feels like they are 'Americanising' the sport....

Passing to yourself would be a time wasting exercise. If you are 1-0 up, you could just tap it and shield it in the nearest corner. I'm no for that one.

I'm not a fan of the passing to yourself rule. But I am really in favour of stopping the clock when the ball goes dead. One of the most frustrating things in the game is seeing players time wasting and refs not being consistent with either punishing it and/or not applying the correct amount of time for stoppages.

Btw....I'm listening to that Album you sent me. I haven't responded because I'm working my way through it. It's a mellow one...a certain mood would catch me listening to it.

I agree it's frustrating but like rcl says the issue is more the refs not enforcing the rules properly.

Nothing pisses me off more than seeing a keeper time waste all game and the ref booking him with 5 to go... what the **** does that achieve? <doh>

I agree as I referred to before that refs don't enforce it properly. Basically most of this seems to be change for changes sake. There must be so many people employed who just need justify their jobs by making needless changes in various industries

on reflection I think I have to agree, the refs are the problem. They don't do their job

Keepers pissing about for longer than 6 seconds need to be penalised. 7 seconds is not 6 seconds, therefore rule broken..direct free kick to the oppo.

I'd like to see most of these trialed.
The passing to yourself thing does sound ****, though.
Not sure what they're thinking with that one.

There needs to be some consistent method for trying these things out.
Maybe use an unpopular league, which would give them a new draw?

Much of the time wasting would disappear if people knew it would have no effect on the playing time

I don't think that it would. It's not just about wasting time, for some teams, but about destroying momentum.

It happens a lot in Rugby. For instance, when a pack is under pressure near their own line you'll often see one of the defensive forwards go down 'injured'. Ok the clock stops so no time is lost, but the 'injury' gives him and his under pressure teammates some often much needed rest before the next scrum.
