Seeing as a few teams have announced their drivers for the Jerez test, it seems an appropriate time to start this thread. I'll update this when more information becomes available.

Clearly obvious Massa is being favoured over Alonso <laugh>

Maybe he wants more rest after the 2012 season? That or Alonso ate more Turkey than Massa and still needs to lose some extra weight to get closer to Felipe? Would guess Ferrari would want to avoid injury or health problems for Fernando and need to take it slowly.

Maybe the new Ferrari has a 'tighter' design and Alonso doesn't fit in properly? Massa's tiny so could fit in a shoebox.

Maybe because Ferrari normally set on fire in testing, so it is better to have the 2nd driver covering more days.

I keep hoping for the day that dog-awful Barcelona chicane is finally removed. A chicane is supposed to be a temporary solution for any logistical problems a part of the track may have. Given that safety has improved dramatically and the cars have much more downforce and grip than before (certainly more than the MotoGP bikes that take the old corner) I fail to see why they have to keep using it. It's ruined that beautiful, double right-hander.

You raise a very good point; and it is very much in tune with driver thinking, since the present solution is rather unpopular, to say the least.

At the time of its introduction, the new Barcelona chicane was 'sold' to the public as having been constructed in order to improve overtaking! This might seem unbelievable, given what we know now; but back in 2007, it was thought by some (I believe this included Tilke; but certainly it did not include me!) that the problem of 'follow the leader' aerodynamics generally responsible for the lack of overtaking might be offset by slowing the cars down first because the slow speeds bring cars well below the aerodynamic threshold believed to be causing the problem.

However, I re-iterate that this thinking was 'sold' to the public! The real reason for the introduction and continuing presence of this bastardised piece of track, which has destroyed what was previously this circuit's 'Tarzan' corner, is that relentless improvements in aerodynamic efficiency were allowing the cars to go through there faster and faster; eventually flat to the floor; but with the same very restricted run-off area. So, the reason for the chicane was, pure and simple: 'Safety'.

    Therefore,
RR, your hopes – and mine – that this "dog-awful chicane is finally removed" will remain dashed unless the circuit buys the land necessary in order to extend the run off area and relocate the grandstand. Unfortunately, your final sentence about "…more downforce and grip than before…" is the very reason the chicane is needed!

**Incidentally, Moto GP bike cornering speeds are far, far below F1 cars. They have similar power to weight ratios, and their top speeds may be similar at some circuits but bikes have nothing like the cornering ability of an F1 car for two quite distinct reasons:

    • Bikes have just two tyres, as opposed to four; and their combined 'contact patch' on the track surface is still less than just one F1 rear tyre!
    • Bikes cannot generate anything like the downforce of an F1 car. This downforce does not matter in a straight line (hence DDRS etc.) although it helps early acceleration, but it sticks a car to the ground like a magnet over a metal surface, thus allowing massively faster cornering.

For an approximate comparison, if a Moto GP bike achieves a lap time of 2 minutes at a given circuit, an F1 car will be doing it in about 90 seconds. This, despite the two having very similar acceleration and top speeds. Therefore it can be seen that the cornering speeds are very different!

Fernando to sit out and 'Intensify' his training and leaving the car in the hands of Massa and De La Rosa to iron out early problems. ot a bad move really and shows Ferrari mean business in 2013

True, I had hoped for it to be a similar case such as in Spa '94 where Eau Rouge was tainted with stacks of tires all in the name of overwhelming safety demand; thank god that they were able to get some run-off area there, else I fear it would still be the same today. Sadly I don't see Barcelona having the infrastructure to be able to move the grandstands back to provide the ample run-off area, what with the financial crisis Spain is going through; they're stuggling to keep hold of one race even, much less listen to fans on how they want the track to be. So yeah, bit of a pipe dream, but we can dream nonetheless :emoticon-0106-cryin

For the first test, isn't Paul Di Resta doing all 4 days for Force India?

He's doing 3 and a half days I think, with James Rossiter doing the remaining half a day. Force India haven't given us any date of when Rossiter is in the car.
