I'm quite enjoying the SL speculation. A mere 6 months ago people were still ridiculing us for paying £12M.

 

Now he finds himself in the enviable position of cherry picking any club in world football, or some would have us believe. What a difference 6 months can make.

 

One sticking point may be that, he's actually happy here! Shock horror......you don't have to print that red tops!
He's one player I'm really looking forward to watching at the euro's, shame England haven't got more of his elk.

 

I concur! Think he's played himself into a starting role nicely in time for the tournament (although a few Irish supporting friends inform me that it's a case of "who else"). I think you have to watch him play week in week out to really understand his strengths and abilities. If I paid Southampton no attention this season and saw only a few glimpses, as a Liverpool fan or a Juventus fan I would, I imagine, be underwhelmed with the link too. I suppose the Spurs link could have legs, maybe Liverpool too but top Spanish teams, Juventus, can't see it personally.

 

Shane has impressed Koeman the most this season....he has said that when asked directly. Does anyone think Shane isn't aware of this as well? He is playing the best football of his life...here at Saints with this team around him. If he was eighteen and an idiot, he would fall for the flattery and chase the big money and not care whether he plays every week or not. Pretty sure that Shane is not an idiot. He will be here next season.

I refer you back to Les Reed's comments. Some teams will be watching the Euros and making snap decisions on what they see...whereas we will be looking at players we have already selected to fit in here. This interest in Shane falls into that category...people look at him and think he will do that for us....not necessarily. We saw that he suited us and paid highly to get him...who the **** is laughing now.

Article talking about a link with a striker from Napoli...are we allowed to cite another forum? Are we interested or do agents just put our name in the list to rouse interest. Nice to know we are good enough to create interest....but, if so, the agent should have put better rivals than Stoke or Crystal Palace. We are used to having Liverpool and Spurs as rivals now.

 

We all know that Shane Long (like the rest of us) will do whatever his wife bloody well says.

He can be happy yet still leave. If a top team come in with a £40m bid I could still see him going.

 

IF! IMO he isn't worth 40 million. His true valuation is 20-25 and we want him that much.

 

The problem with this new TV money is that everyone's price goes up, but at this stage nobody has a clue by what factor. Mane is a 20-25m player a season ago, but with this influx of money does that make him worth 30/35/40/50m now? The issue this summer with trying to get business done early is that noone really knows how the extra money for PL will effect the market. IF Mane does go, makes his intentions clear etc then the sensible thing would be to try and shift him as soon as possible, get as much for him and then find replacements, giving them all/most of pre season to settle in. But this summer I would suggest waiting to see what prices are like, as IF we sold Mane for say £25m and then a couple of weeks later an inferior player goes for similar or perhaps more then we have shot ourselves in the foot.

This is all obviously hypothetical before anyone jumps on me saying he won't go etc

 

That's what I am getting at Fran. If a club like Liverpool bid £25m as it stands now we have a 50/50 chance of Mane staying. Due to how well we did in the league. But if a team such as Man City, Barca, Real Madrid, Bayern etc come in with a huge bid that chances everything.

 

I think we will try and keep most of this team together and Mane is an important member of the team. I bet this is what we have promised Ronald (though he can be pragmatic). We may be offered a good price for him, but Saints stated intention is to improve each season and chase the title and CL spot. The extra money may make the offered price go up, but also gives us the power to resist it. I know you always have to make provisos in any statement where football is concerned, but I am hopeful that we will only lose Victor (out of the players we'd like to keep).

 

We don't HAVE to sell him even for £40m, he could be the difference between qualifying for the CL and all the extra revenue that brings and if we get there he might want to stay anyway. Sometimes you have to put your foot down as was the situation with Morgan a couple of years ago.

 

Yes, these things can happen and a player can be attracted by the chance to play for a big side. Let's keep hoping they don't as there are plenty of other fish in the sea
