Back to summer transfers, we've now recruited 9 players to replace the 10 who have left. One of those was Turner, who never featured last season. A couple of the new players are future prospects, but we still have a 27 man squad now according to my count and hopefully Fonkeu will sign soon and another CB added as well, though I wonder whether Stiepermann could be the left CB in a 3 at the back formation with Husband at WB.
It seemed that our defence still struggled a lot on Saturday... Zimmermann was said to have bailed the others out a few times. We need another CB to replace Martin (who, whilst he has given everything to this club, is only useful as back up). Otherwise, we could end up like last season. One positive from Saturday though is that, unlike Neil, Farke noticed that his first system wasn't working and changed it early. He had a plan B!!!
Quite clearly we will not carry a squad of that size so now the sales will start. As we can only sell players who other Clubs want and not players the fans want to leave - wait for the optimism to turn into howls of discontent and protest.
I like the 3-5-2 formation we started with, but the midfielders weren't getting back to help the WB's when we were defending. Wildschut doesn't look comfortable as a WB but Pinto or even Martin could do better there. Once Klose is back I doubt Martin will start at CB often. Zimmerman was brilliant though and now looks to be an excellent acquisition. Franke is still adjusting to the change, but seemed to improve as the game went on.
We can't be the only club on the planet that thinks Naismith was worth £8.5m and continues to be worth 35-40k per week. Can we? Getting shot of him would be the business of the current window, despite all his protestations about wanting to be here and fight for the shirt / team. Where the hell has all that passion and desire been since January 2016?
It was written in the stars that Martin would score an OG and cost us 2 points on the opening day of the season. I am tongue in cheek though, it was unfortunate really. I don't rate Rusty, some people I know do and that's an individual opinion. For me he doesn't look at ease when he has the ball and makes the wrong decisions when pressed. He does however play better as part of a back 3, not sure with Wildshult on the same side though as Wildshult likes to get forward and leaves Rusty exposed. So a choice, you either get a better CB for Rusty's position or you don't play Wildschult and Rusty at the same time. For me, Wildshult has looked decent and is a very good attacking outlet that takes the game to the opposition so I know what I would do....
I think Jacob and Howson leaving has eased the financial squeeze. Naismith might leave, but he seems to suit the new style. McGovern or Tettey could leave if we get any offers but I can't see many others going. DF said that Jerome will stay now.
Times change Mate. In Jan 2016 we were a Premiership Club trying to avoid relegation and prepared to pay a bit over the odds for a squad player from a decent Premiership Club. Who in the Premiership will now want to buy him and who in the Championship could afford a fee and his wages? Nobody, in my opinion, especially as he is now 31. If you want to see him go then the only hope is the winter window when a struggling Premiership Club might be as desperate as we were.
The squeeze might have been eased Rick but we have to clear last years debt and plan for no further parachute payments and the sales to date are not sufficient for that. I hope you are right but I fear the worst if big money bids arrive nor can I see a Club in our predicament carrying a squad of nearly 30 Players. We shall see.
I thought the debt was sorted? From comments from various fairly-respected journos, the Dorrans and Howson money plugged the majority of it, with Murphy's money covering the rest with some left over for manoeuvring. Closing a ~£25m gap ahead of next summer is admittedly going to require sales, no matter what we've done with the wage budget. That said, Tettey and Wes are the only players on decent money who are out of contract next summer (plus Trybull, Jones, Matthews and Andreu), so whether we sell this summer, January or next summer isn't as crucial. The stock of most of our players is pretty low right now, so I wouldn't be surprised if we don't sell this summer, in the hope they'll be worth more in a future window.
Any idea when Prichard, Pinto and Klosse will be back from injury? Where did Basong and Mulumba go eventually?
From what I've heard, Bassong is busy thacking his Maserati up and down the A14 - and getting caught for speeding and both he and Mulumbu are still without clubs / deals. Kinda tells it's own story, Ja, for sure. Pinto and Wes are supposed to be in the squad tomorrow.
Bassong got caught speeding at 110mph recently and has been pre-season training in Heathersett park as far as I know. Mulumbu was, I heard our highest earner because we didn't pay a transfer fee. No idea where he's gone.
That's what I meant three posts ago by "busy thacking his Maserati up and down the A14"! I just wish he'd have 'thacked' a few more clearances into touch while he was here, instead of trying to dribble and run beyond the halfway line - which inevitably resulted in tears...MINE!
The Job Description includes this requirement: "Must be able to defend set pieces"... As yet no-one has applied thus far ..............
