Koala survives 10-mile journey in Adelaide stuck in car's wheel arch

please log in to view this image

A koala survived a 10-mile journey stuck under a car's wheel arch until the driver stopped and heard the distressed animal's cries.

The female koala had crawled under the four wheel drive vehicle while it had been parked in the hills on the outskirts of Adelaide, Australia.

Firefighters were called and removed the wheel off the car to free the animal, which was clinging to the axle.

The koala, which is a protected "vulnerable" species, was taken to a nearby vet where it was discovered she once had a joey - a baby koala.

Jane Brister, of the wildlife group Fauna Rescue said:'She had a lot of knocks on her upper back which is a sign a joey was clinging to her back."

Rescuers returned to the scene in the early hours of the morning searching for the joey but there was no sign of it.

Ms Brister said: "It would have been hot in there. You think you've seen it all. No, I've never seen anything like that and it's absolutely incredible.

"She was crying a little bit, she was a little bit shaken, she was certainly in shock but I rushed her straight to the vet."

The koala was dubbed Kelli, the name of one of the firefighters who came to her rescue.

Dave Juniper of the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service, said: "Kelli's one of our fine station officers and she led the rescue crew that day and she was quite excited to have such a good outcome."

After being cleaned up and monitored for a week, the koala was released back into the bush.

Ms Brister added: "After everything she's been through, she's had so much stress and trauma, to see her just toddle off and up the tree, and currently she's found the biggest fork in the tree, she's snuggled up, she's fast asleep."

Rescue workers say it is not unusual for koalas to seek shelter in unusual places.

I will bump this thread every day with updates about the sort of sh!t that happens here in Reading where I live<ok>

Man who urinated on 'terrified' woman after sex in a Reading hotel deserved his sentence

A misogynist who urinated on a "terrified" woman after having sex with her in a hotel room has been told he deserved every day of his 16-week jail stretch.

Charles Bates, 22, had consensual sex with the victim after picking her up in a Reading nightclub then heading back to the town's Ibis Hotel in Friar Street with two friends of his.

After the sexual encounter, the naked woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, got out of bed to use the bathroom.

But before she returned to bed Bates swapped places with one of his mates in the dark as an unkind prank.

The woman got back into bed with the person she thought was Bates, who proceeded to commit a sexual assault on her.

Upon realising that she was in bed with the wrong man after about five minutes, the traumatised victim leapt out of bed.

She was cowering naked on the floor when "all three reacted by laughing at her".

The court heard Bates then took things to another level of degradation by urinating on the humiliated woman as she huddled on the floor, with one of his friends joining in.

The victim fled half dressed, alerting hotel staff to her plight, and the police arrived in the early hours to arrest the three in their room.

Bates, of Madeira Avenue, Codsall, Wolverhampton, pleaded guilty to common assault at Reading Crown Court and was jailed for 16 weeks on Thursday, July 27.

The man who had joined in urinating on the victim was jailed for 10 weeks, while the one who committed the sexual assault was caged for a year.

On Thursday, September 7 Bates asked Mr Justice Holgate at London's Criminal Appeal Court to reduce his jail term, arguing that he was treated too harshly.

CCTV released after man exposes and touches himself on Reading train

please log in to view this image

Police have released CCTV images of a man they want to speak to after a person was seen touching himself inappropriately on a train heading to Reading.

Officers say the "shocking and distressing" incident happened on a train travelling from Twyford to Reading at around 4.10pm on Wednesday, July 26.

The man exposed himself after he sat down behind a 48-year-old woman from Reading and two other women and then started touching himself inappropriately.

Police believe the man in the CCTV images may have important information about the incident.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "This was clearly a shocking and distressing experience for the victim and our priority is to make sure the person responsible is traced and brought to justice.

"We are urging any potential witnesses to come forward, and are particularly keen to hear from the two women sat near the man.

"We believe they may have been speaking Polish and it is vitally important we speak to them, as they may have seen or heard something that could prove crucial to this investigation."

If you recognise the man in the CCTV image text 61016 or phone 0800 40 50 40 and quote reference number 369 of 26/07/201

New Zealand has been rocked by a 6.1 magnitude earthquake which struck southwest of Invercargill, followed by a 5.1 magnitude quake northeast of Seddon.

The quake caused 'moderate shaking' reported Geonet.

Initial classifications called it a strong quake, hitting 585km southwest of Invercargill at a depth of 10km.

Tremors may have been felt in Balclutha, Gore, Invercargill, Lumsden, Roxburgh, Te Anau and Tuatapere, while the Seddon quake was felt strongly in Wellington.

New Zealand authorities have issued a reminder to 'drop, cover, and hold' in the event of an earthquake.

Residents of Wellington (pictured, stock image) reported feeling the second of two quakes to hit New Zealand on Wednesday

The second quake was strong enough to be felt in nation's capital, with Metlink Wellington reporting all trains have been stopped.

A seismologist said the two quakes - which hit exactly an hour apart - were not linked.

People took to social media to air their concerns about their city, one calling Wellington a 'disaster waiting to happen'

GNS seismologist Dr Anna Kaiser said there was no link to the Mexico City earthquake that has left more than 100 people dead.

'It's certainly something that can't be scientifically proven,' she said.

Dr Kaiser said that although earthquakes can trigger aftershocks nearby, that is unlikely to be the cause of the Seddon quake.

'But obviously that's [aftershocks] not a mechanism that could explain the earthquake in the Cook Strait because it was too far away to be caused by that kind of stress change,' she said.

One shocked resident wrote that her city is a 'disaster waiting to happen' as Wellington was rocked by the latest in a long line of quakes.

'Rocking side to side in a rocky chair: the Wellington experience,' wrote another.

Others made light of the tremors, with one Twitter user writing: 'Yikes that shake I thought was me moving in my seat (need to lay off the donuts...) was actually an earthquake.'

No tsunami warnings have been issued.

Seddon resident Pam Tawhara was looking up backing recipes on her computer when the quake struck, Stuff reported.

'It felt like a normal aftershock, then I thought "bloody hell". It was a bit scary, there was a violent, thudding jolt and it went boom, boom, boom,' she said.

No damage was done to her home, and nothing fell from her shelves.

Another Seddon resident, Wendy Caughley, reported getting a shock when she felt the earthquake.

She says she heard the quake coming - describing it as a long, loud rumble that could have been heavy vehicles moving through an adjacent vineyard.

'Then an ornament fell off the wall, and the dog ran outside and I ran outside too. I think we're just going to sit out here until my husband gets home from work,' she said.

The first quake hit a seismically active area near a plate boundary where the Australian plate dives below the Pacific plate, the NZ Herald reported.

This boundary is called the Puysegur trench, and stretches for 800km between New Zealand's South Island and a point in the Southern Ocean 400km west of the Auckland Islands.

A similar 6.4 quake hit the trench in July, with an epicentre 190km southwest of the Snares Islands.

That quake was felt all around the South Island.
