The players are treated as intangible assets on the P&L with a straight line amortisation over the period of their contracts, all the info is freely available on Companies House's website, you used to have to pay for this but it is now free for any info on any company, this link should go to the filed accounts,

    Two possibilities:

    a. No investment is being planned. Rafa stayed on knowing this and/or is sitting by without complaint while he is being set up to add having had a team relegated while he was in charge to his CV;

    b. Transfers are underway but are not currently being announced, perhaps so that they appear as transactions for the financial year commencing 1 July 2017.

At the moment, I would say the second is somewhat more likely

    c. No major investment is planned. Rafa stayed on thinking that Ashley was planning to spend enough money to make us competitive for mid-table whilst actually Ashley was only allowing £2.50 for transfers. Rafa is slowly coming to this realisation and we are in trouble.

I agree though that b is still most likely but you have missed out a pretty glaring possibility that Rafa and Ashley have different ideas regarding the level of investment required to make us competitive.

Bournemouth are allegedly spending £20m on Nathan Ake. For me, value for money is a thing of the past, no such thing. You work out the players you need, draw up maybe 3 options and just buy the best you can. It should be modelled on a budget; here ya go, Rafa, you have £80m. Best of luck. If he then decides he needs £30m for Kieran Gibbs, so be it.

To me we NEED a CB with prem experience, a defensive midfielder, a winger and an actual goalscorer.

Cheap options: Jagielka, Leiva, Gouffran contract, someone I've never heard of

Better perhaps: Sahko (£20-£25m was quoted a month ago, I'd pay that happily seeing the figures going around), a loan for a striker from one of the big clubs (Batshuayi, etc), Nasri (never going to happen but what is he doing now?!?), etc.

I can see us spending £50m and patting ourselves on the back despite us needing to have spent a lot more!

Sensible post for me. I still think b. is most likely.

I think we are all wise enough to know it would daft to assume b. where Ashley is concerned, but I don't think he deliberately gets relegated. He just likes to roll the dice. I don't think he will do that this season.

The only rider to all that is, he rarely follows trends. The one time he spent big, was when everyone else wasn't in 2015. We have also been fed that January is not his preferred time, but he has gone against this at various stages - namely when he want to protect his investment because its PL status is in danger. It worked with Mbiwa, Sissoko etc, it didn't with Townsend and Jonjo etc. Whether he has learnt that doing it prior to the season in a proactive fashion is more sensible in football is the obvious question.

He could very well try and skimp it, before a reactive effort in January again. He is very capable of it. I don't think now is the time to judge. The season with Gini, Thauvin, Mitrovic, Mbemba - the big spend came after July 6th. It could be a combination of a number things, one of which is we feed off the scraps from the big clubs like the rest. It also takes time to get business done. That links back to the scraps as players assess their options. I don't think FFP plays any part at all personally. We're not gonna blow that much.

We've always felt like we've been a bit 'ploddy' when it comes to transfers. Mainly attribute this to Lee Charnley, I think he's punching well above his weight in terms of capability. I also don't feel we're particularly well staffed for a major football club.

The fact remains that, regardless of outgoings, since January last year very few clubs have spent as much as we have. Jonjo, Townsend, Ritchie, Gayle, Clark, etc., didn't come for free. I fully expect a higher but similar amount of incomings/outgoings.

Either way it can't be easy, right? For example, I don't think Mitrovic is guaranteed to still be here. However, I then don't think we can spend big on a decent CF if we don't know where Mitro's going to be. We're in that lower tier of clubs, sell before you buy. So we could be sat waiting for Fenerbahce to hit the £15m, then off goes Mitro and we offset that against spending £25m on Batshuayi. It's all just guesswork, but that's what the papers are doing so why can't I have a go?!

I don't think even Ashley will be deluded enough to think we don't need major investment for next season. The big question is what counts as major investment. Times have changed and value for money has gone out of the window. If we spend £20 million now to smash our transfer record we will end up with someone who is as good as Michael Owen actually was rather than how good we thought he would be.

Don't recall your own childhood and try to superimpose it onto mine. I'm like the Sean Connery of James Bond at his sexual peak. You're like the David Niven or Barry Nelson #rankedbottom

I assume I wasn't running that particular competition. Not because I am ranked bottom - just the fact that the rankings have been updated in the first place!

You criticised Chippy for guessing just last week, just because he got it wrong.

There's educated guessing, then there's random guessing, then there's sticking a pin in it blindfolded after being spun around 20 times, then there's attempting to translate Russian whilst drunk, then a few leagues below that there's Chippy's attempt.
