There are different forms of doing guard duty; the public facing guards are doing what is known as Public Duties, which have been carried out by all arms for a very long time, 80s I believe. Their personal security is adequately covered, according to the threat level, coupled with it nature. This is not something I have read about.

The security of the VIPs is down to expert operatives, a mix of armed forces and police selected for the work. They are called Close Protection Officers; quietly impressive people.

Then there is the security ring of electronic surveillance and rapid response. You and I don't know what that is now, as that would be madness, wouldn't it.

The police are our civilian law enforcement. If they must be armed to carry out their duties then that is what must be done; but don't let's lose track of the fact that they must be selected and trained, with the proviso that they do have a choice.

The jumpers and jeans are appropriate to their need. The well advised stab- vest can be quickly removed for them to mingle, if needs be.

A squaddie, in No. 2 dress, with Forage Hat and ammo boots, trying to take on terrorists in jumpers and jeans is a bit Monty Python for me. They are a huge tourism boost without the comedy. (That's tongue in cheek.)

As OLM posted, the SAS were there very quickly, they don't have far to travel.

I agree there seems to have been a security weakness at the Carriage Gates; It will be dealt with. Whether or not the military should be used is down to those responsible, but I would hope the use of the military will be kept as low profile as possible, as I prefer the police to be used for such things.

I maybe stating the obvious, forgive me if this is a big whoosh, but for someone to get riled up over another's political views, wouldn't there need to be some political views in the first place to get riled up over?

And that Bob is the philosophical incongruity of the anarchist standpoint.

Ya Man will now disappear in a puff of logic.

    With a bit of luck.

Why not use these guys, in some shape or form?

The Military Provost Guard Service (MPGS) provides professional soldiers to meet armed security requirements at Royal Navy, Army, RAF and other MOD bases in Great Britain.
Stationed at over 106 sites, the MPGS have their own Military Local Service Contract which allows soldiers to choose where they wish to serve, providing there is a vacancy.

From this website you will be able to discover more about the MPGS, as well as look at our current recruitment opportunities.

please log in to view this image

    The role of the MPGS
The primary role of the MPGS is to counter the terrorist threat posed to military bases in Great Britain through the provision of armed guarding services.

    MPGS duties include:

    • Controlling entry and exit to a site.
    • Managing control room operations and ensuring all visitors are dealt with efficiently.
    • Patrolling site perimeters and taking necessary action to preserve perimeter security.
    • Security incident management, such as suspicious packages, bomb threats, protests, etc.
    • Military Working Dog services at some sites.
The MPGS is part of the Provost Branch of the Adjutant General's Corps and is under the direction of Provost Marshal (Army), who is the Director and Head of Service. MPGS units are formed under the command of their respective Head of Establishment, with Provost Marshal (Army) maintaining technical standards through annual inspections.

Each MPGS unit has a structured rank system that provides opportunity for promotion to Senior Non-Commissioned Officer, and Warrant Officer Level 2 rank at some sites. Given the size of the MPGS, a number of Warrant Officer Level 1 opportunities exist across the country. Promotion is based on merit and uses the same system of annual performance appraisal in line with the current Tri-Service guidance for appraisal reporting.

This wasn't a terrorist attack, it was just an asshole nutter in a car with some knives trying to get some notoriety with his death, as he'd been a no account loser his whole-life.

He should either be laughed at, or pitied, depending on your character

That's the reason, right there. Changing that would, in my opinion, erode the basic quality of our society and I see absolutely no need for it, as I believe the police do a magnificent job, as do the Armed Forces (and there is a clue in their respective titles).

Excuse me!!! I happen to have been a no account loser for all my life too. I wouldn't even dream of killing someone just because they didn't agree with my beliefs.

I'd have to be insane to do that...

Just for a second there I thought you was Big Vern <yikes> But you're not so carry on.

I doubt his beliefs had anything to do with it tbh, that was just the only way he could claim some sort of 'glory' and recognition.
He's famous now, which was his intention, he's on the same level as a school shooter, or that crossbow killer guy.

His infamy will drift away very quickly. His family will remember. His 'friends' will remember.

We'll just have to deal with them.

    We will.

You can start a thread to discuss anarchy or anything else why not keep this one relatively on-topic

It's funny that you of all people would call someone out for being too bourgeois considering you were in the RAF. At least we have one thing in common though, Happy. I'm also a bisexual.
