Just got chatting with my Man Utd supporting mate and he said that either a top 4 finish or qualifying for the Champions League by winning the Europa Cup would constitute as decent seasons at this point.

He might consider a FA + League Cup and finishing above Liverpool but otherwise everything else would be considered a failure.

    What do you think?

For me winning any of the competitions is better than coming top four. Also couldn't give a **** about where Liverpool finish but would obviously prefer they don't win anything.

For it to be considered a good season europa league and league cup would do it for me.

We need to start challenging for the title though because that's what it's all about.

Ultimately the minimum is playing CL football next season. Anything else even EFL and FA cups would be considered a failure.

    So
    1. top 4 on its own would be just about acceptable.

    2. Europa would be better as it means CL and a top trophy

    3. EFL plus top 4 or/and Europa would be next.

    4. Europa and EFL and/or FA cups and top 4 would be icing on the cake. Unlikely but this would be a successful first season for JM.

Agree, Europa League and League Cup would be great.

Third, fourth or even second on top of that would be excellent.

Personally I would be happy with some domestic silverware as a decent reward for a season which started badly, but the team have made up for with some determined results. On that basis I actually wouldn't be too bothered if, just for this season we didn't qualify for CL football - there is such a clear improvement in the side under JM that there is a sense that normal order will be restored next season - particularly with one or two signings. Having said all that - we are building quite some momentum and, barring some unforeseen cock-up, we should be heading for a good finish in the Europy paint thing too.

It wouldn't just be for this season though, it would mean two in a row.

I think we should be in the CL and, to be perfectly frank, the CL needs United.

Ideally we win the Europa league and we've killed two birds with one stone, a trophy (plus it's a european one) and we get in the CL. I think we just have to go all out to win it.

To me it's immaterial whether Griezmann signs, great of he does but I'm not bothered if he doesn't as we've got Rashford/Martial/Mkhytarian (and Shaw of course!) all vying for a similar position so we don't need him.

He wouldn't sign if we don't get CL though and probably wouldn't be alone in that stance. That's how it is.

I think Rooney will leave, if not during this Chinese window then certainly in Summer. I suspect all this talk of him being injured is a pre-cursor to a move (my missus mentioned the fact that Mrs Rooney has been dropped by her fashion thingy) so, coincidence or no, things to seem to be happening surrounding his future. That said, we need a replacement and Griezmann - if we can lure him in - is a like for like replacement for Rooney in his heyday.

I would agree with that on all counts in principle. Rooney will leave and Griezmann would be perfect replacement.

Isn't Mkhytarian also ready made though in effect?

    You could have a front four of;

    Rashford

    Martial Lingard/Mhky

    Mkhy/Mata

    and not need Griezmann anyway.

Might be irrelevant if we don't get CL as I doubt he'd come anyway.

I like Greizmann's versatility - he was a fantastic winger until Simeone moved him into the striker's role after Costa left for Chavbus. That more than his out and out goal scoring ability is what I like about him.

CL qualification through the Europa League Trophy or Top 4 finish WHILE playing entertaining football where we purposefully outclass the opposition and open up defences.
