... where everybody knows your name.

This thread is for discussion/rambling/ranting/raving/idle chit-chat on all things non-football related.

Now, grab a stool, a beer/whiskey/J20/spritzer and indulge.

    Evening all,

I will start the proceedings by asking if anyone has been watching the new series of Dynamo on Watch. For those who are not familiar with the guy, he is a magician that is truly unbelievable. He is not the run of the mill magician, plies his trade by doing tricks etc to members of the public in the street. If you have not seen him then I recommend you try to catch him on Thursday at 9pm on Watch TV.

I saw a little of the Dynamo show ... he was in Brazil, I think. The best part is watching people's reactions. Not to bring up a certain game people play with their feet, but there's a good one of him pulling a trick on a team that primarily wears black and white. I like the one, too, where he's in the gym with all these muscle heads and then, with his skinny little girl arms (no offense, Penguin), he gets under a bar of about 140 kilos and benches it.

There's a magician in the States that does the same stuff - David Blaine. But what's even better than David Blaine is the fake David Blaine on YouTube - hysterical. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTqsV3q7rRU

I make my annual visit to the UK next month. I hope the weather's improved by then, otherwise I'll have to bring my Wellies.

Whilst we are on the subject of somewhere where "everyone knows your name" I see myself as Cliff. Who's putting their hand up for Norm?

I think I'll either be Sam or Fraiser. I have the ability to get inside people's heads <party>

I had this discussion with some mates at a bar last night, none of them could give me an answer, despite the fact mine has not changed since what seems like eons ago.

What are your top five favorite bands/groups/singers? Doesn't have to be in numerical order, although that would of course help me to no extent.

    1. Idlewild
    2. The Beatles
    3. R.E.M.
    4. Nirvana
    5. The Offspring

Idlewild are genius. Some of you may not have heard of them as their popularity peak came around 10 years ago, but they are a fantastic underrated Scottish indie/alternative rock/folk band. The Beatles is self explanatory, although I dislike the albums most Beatles fans like (Sgt. Pepper, Revolver) R.E.M. my Dad got me into after bringing me to a concert of theirs, and the rest was history. After hearing Smells Like Teen Spirit I bought six of Nirvana's albums (studio, live, b-sides etc) and now it is not even one of my favorites of theirs, fantastic band with so many levels. Bleach, Nevermind and In Utero sound like three albums from three different bands. Number five is slightly disputed, it's really a top four and another band I really like, but the fifth is replaceable, whereas the other four are not

    Opinions welcome.

Are you just looking for bands, Bandy (see what I did there?), or are solo artists acceptable?

I really liked Idlewild for a while, having heard and loved a couple of singles. I bought the album with those singles on (can't remember which one, sorry) which I was hugely underwhelmed by. When I revisited it a couple of years ago, I couldn't even remember which tracks on it I had liked in the first place. Horses for courses, I suppose.

I am always seeking to expand my iTunes library Cappy ;)

Was the album The Remote Part by any chance? It got to Number Three in the UK charts with singles like American English, A Modern Way of Letting Go and You Held the World in Your Arms but they changed their sound after that album and lost a lot of fans. Sadly they are now disbanded but at least I got the chance to see them live before the end.

Your top five Cappy? I am expecting some humdingers.

I've not got access to my cds at the moment, and I never got around to putting the Idlewild one onto my iPod, so I'm not sure, but 'American English' rings a bell, so it may well be The Remote Part.

A top five is tough. If we're looking for the solid, all-but unchangables, then I can certainly manage a top four:

    1. Richard Thompson
    2. Billy Bragg
    3. Belle and Sebastian
    4. The Band

After that, there are lots who would once have featured in the top five but not so much now, lots who come and go interchangeably, and lots who have one or perhaps two albums that would put them in the top five if they had consistently delivered to that standard. The Beatles are a great shout, but somehow I always feel that they are so iconic they just stand apart from this kind of list. I know that doesn't strictly make sense, but they seem so universal that they are beyond being anyone's personal favourites.

Richard Thompson is quite simply the most astonishing guitarist I've seen. Generally I go for wordsmiths rather than players (and he's a fine wordsmith) but whenever I've taken a guitarist friend to see RT, there has always been a moment where I glance over to see their reaction and see them literally (I'm using the word in its proper sense here) slack-jawed with amazement. Every time. I'm seeing him in Southampton next month, 26 years since the first time I saw him live.

Ten years ago, Belle and Sebastian wouldn't have been on the list, but Lyle Lovett would have been. Mumford and Sons (new album out in September) have the potential to stake a claim to the number 5 spot. If everything Ryan Adams did was like Gold or Ashes and Fire, he may well be on there too. When I was a teenager/student, it would have been unthinkable for me not to include Supertramp. I still love some of their stuff (the album Crime of the Century, for example), but other albums haven't aged so well. If we're talking underrated Scottish bands, I'll see your Idlewild and raise you Del Amitri and the Proclaimers, although they feel like they belong in a slightly lower division to the four that actually made my list.

Captain - given your other choices where do you stand on Dylan (Bob, that is, not Jakob or the stoned rabbit from the Magic Roundabout)? I was meant to see Richard Thompson play at a festival a few years ago but he cryed off with a broken hand. Everyone should own I Want to See Bright Lights Tonight by Fairport Convention, though, and Music From Big Pink by The Band for that matter.

I used to be a big fan of Fairport Convention, but I tired of them a bit after a few trips to Cropredy (the folk music festival). Richard Thompson is undeniably brilliant though - Beeswing is one of my favourite songs.

Show of Hands are a very good folk band, if you're that way inclined. More folk rock than traditional folk though.

I love Dylan at his best, and my toes curl with embarassment at his worst. Blood on the Tracks is as good as it gets for me with Dylan.

I can remember seeing The Last Waltz on telly one night when I was in secondary school. A few months later, on the first day of a holiday on the Norfolk Broads with my family, I saw a copy of the three-disc album release in the small but wonderfully eclectic selection of albums in the general store where we collected keys for our boat. Buying it would mean blowing half of my holiday money on day 1 for something that I coudn't listen to until we got home a week later. I bought the album: great decision.

Bright Lights is Richard and Linda, not Fairport. Bizarrely, the shuffle feature on my iPod threw up Fairport's Matty Groves this morning. Happy days.

Thinking about Bandit's list idea, Richard Thompson is the one act who would have been on my top five list 25 years ago, and would never have come off it in the intervening time.

If you put a gun against my head for my favourite RT track, I'd probably say Wall of Death, but Beeswing is a great shout.

Blimey, loaded question! Are we talking "Of All Time" or by genre? Because I could write an essay on this!

Well bugger me sideways, maybe we're not so different. I'm primarily a Metal guy, but I've had a strong affinity for all of those bands at one point (apart from The Beatles, I can't stand them). The Offspring were the band that got me listening to music and inspired me to start playing guitar - I have the skull tattooed on my arm! Nirvana I loved when I was at 6th form like everyone else. I recently dug out all my old CDs and found myself bingeing on them again. The Unplugged in New York DVD is special, because the performance is far from perfect but it's so, so good. REM, well, everybody likes REM, right? They're a good song machine, one of those bands that seem to have a hundred good songs. Idlewild I never got into very much at all, but I used to absolutely love American English.
