Since we have the General Chat situation coming up every now and then, I thought it might be useful if we had a stickied thread where new users, or people who weren't sure about things could come to look so that they knew what was going on, or find out how to do things.

I've started it off, but being quite used to using various forums I'm sure there's technical things people will think need adding that I haven't thought of. So if anyone has suggestions, or things they want to know how to do just add them below and we'll see how we get on.

    Rules for the Hull Forum

I think we only really have the 3 we all agreed on when we first came over from the BBC 606 site.

    1) We don't talk about politics unless it's related to the club/football - ie the Allams vs the Council over the stadium.

    2) We don't talk about religion.

    3) We don't act like arses with each other or be otherwise offensive.

NB: These are just the rules for this section of the site. You're free to post in any section of the site, but bear in mind other sections may have different rules and when you are there you will be expected to follow them.

    Hints/Information

    1) Swearing

    Swearing is allowed.

If you wish to hide the swearing, either because you come on here with your kids, or because you come on at work and they have a swear filter that prevents access to offending sites* there is an optional swear filter on the site. At the very bottom left hand side of the site there's a drop down menu, select "no swearing" for the filter to be turned on, and "swearing" for it to be off.

People that are going to swear should be aware of that, there's no need to reverse any letters in ****, or spell **** with a k. All it will do is mean that the swear filter doesn't work for those that want it to, and could result in a partial or total inability for them to access the site if their work place has a stronger filter than the site does.*

*Work based filters can include schools, or even parental ones at home. The one they used to have on the computers when I was at school used to block the page and flag up the domain name to the admin staff. If a site repeatedly got blocked by the filter the admin would just disable access to it completely.

    2) Off topic threads

It's a football board, but it would be dull if that's all we ever spoke about. Off topic threads are allowed. Any off topic threads should have a title starting with O/T (or at least be obviously about something else), so if you just want the football you don't need to load them to find out.

    3) Posting a thread

When you go to post a thread, underneath the space for the title there is a box with a list of forums in it. Unless you want to post the thread on another board as well as on here you don't need to select anything in that box.

    4) Posting pictures/Videos

If you want to post a picture from another website you can do it using the following code (including using the square brackets):

please log in to view this image

To find the url of the picture, right click on it and select properties. On the window that opens you can select it using your mouse, and then copy it the same way you can in Word using the Ctrl+C buttons. Come onto the forum and when you're writing the post you can paste it in using Ctrl+V.

For videos from youtube you replace img with video in both sets of brackets, and the url is the bit in the address bar at the top of your internet browser so it looks like this:

    5) Not Safe For Work

As with swearing, posts are within reason allowed to contain content that might not be suitable for all circumstances providing they are marked that way. If you have a picture you need to mark up as not safe for work you do it like this:

    [nsfw]
please log in to view this image
    [/nsfw]

You can use the same tags on videos, or even just text, if for example you were talking about a film you'd seen and were posting a spoiler.

The one exception to this rule is miff's Babe of the Day thread. On that thread you don't need to use the nsfw tags. Anybody opening that thread should know what to expect, and therefore if they're at work should know not to open it. The pictures though do need to be "child friendly", as a rule of thumb don't post anything that couldn't be published on page 3.

    6) User status/Points

At the left hand side of posts you'll see various information about posters.

    a) to the right of their username is a little circle. When this is green it means the user is online at the time, when it's white they're not.

    b) Underneath the username there'll be a status, mine says moderator. For normal posters it will say Newbie, Member, or Senior Member. I think you're a Newbie until you make your 30th post. Between 30 and 99 posts you're a member, and then after you've made 100 posts you become a Senior Member.

Occassionally you'll see some fancy sounding titles, they're the site owners and/or administrators.

    c) Underneath that there are 3 bars and an achievements section. I've no idea exactly how they work but you score points based on how long you've been registered, how many threads you've started, how many replies you've received, how many people have looked at your threads, how many posts you've made on other people's threads, and how much of your own profile you've filled in. You can see what you've earnt your points for by going to your profile and looking at the Experiance page.

EDIT: I've found the link that says what points you get for doing each thing:

    http://www.not606.com/xperience.php?go=earn

    7) Moderators

The moderators on all the forums on this site are volunteers. We're just normal posters like everyone else, and we're allowed to have opinions and disagreements with people like everyone else. We just happen to have been given the ability by the administrators to edit and remove posts when it is necessary to make sure the content remains acceptable to the users.

On this forum, as with the rules, all the moderators have been chosen by the users following open threads on who they should be.

Keeping politics and religion out of it makes for a great board, good set of guidelines.

Just added the instructions for posting pictures/videos because I remembered somebody asked the other day. I'm aware that at least some of it will come across as patronising to people, but I'm trying to do it so that even the least technically literate people can follow the instructions.

Not if it's intentional, would fall under the being an arse clause wouldn't it? Posting for the least knowledgeable person on the forum is acceptable though.

I've updated it to include the link to how the points work as well.

It's because you're a new poster. The site owners have set it so that if someone with less than 10 posts makes a post with a link (or picture, or video, etc) it gets auto-moderated and needs approving by one of us before it shows. It's to stop spam bots coming on the site and posting links to dodgy web sites. I'm just eating food having come in from a night out, so I might miss it now but either me or one of the other mods will either approve it or reject it later depending what the vid is.

Just wondering why my avatar doesn't come up next to my posts? Is there something I need to do?

Upload the picture as your avatar, not your profile picture.

Avatars show up next to your name with posts, profile pictures are, well.. on your profile.

"A moderator can randomly assign points, as thanks for a favour. Negative values can also be given." - Would anybody be really annoyed if one day all their points were gone? Or do points make prizes? Is there a limit on how many points you can acrue?

Don't see a problem with multi-quotes myself. In some cases it's a lot better. Tickler has started multi-quoting instead of making 5 consecutive posts replying to different people and it's way easier and quicker to read.
