I'm very disappointed but not surprised at Perez. I seem to remember a few previous incidents where he's displayed a similar disregard.

Force India were tying for 'best team' except that an important member of it is not interested in it. Some seem to see this as a quality to be admired. Not me. Not only did he squander his own team's strategy to have a real chance of getting Ricciardo, he almost created carnage after backing his team mate up enough for Vettel to make a determined but almost out of control lunge on them both! He would become Ferrari's DRS on toast in any case but chose to risk taking Ocon out for purely selfish reasons. I can think of very few drivers who've demonstrated such utter selfishness. Indeed, it seems he did not even trust his own team. And yes, I completely believe Ocon would have done the honourable thing as was promised. One is a nice guy. The other isn't. And no, I do not agree with those who say there's no such thing as Mr Nice Guy in motorsport – or at least no prizes for such mentality. There are loads of examples throughout history. But Perez has firmly written himself off the list.

    In other news…
Despite over-driving at times, Vettel did well to fight back after his first corner clash with Verstappen and was well rewarded by Räikkönen's lacklustre performance and peculiar error – as well as by Perez's stupidity. Verstappen's move was audacious and Vettel did not properly anticipate it (by either holding a wider line or braking a fraction sooner) – but it was not Verstappen's 'fault' any more than it was Vettel's for his slight lack of anticipation.

    • Hamilton was completely dominant in the race and Bottas, who likes the circuit, was a long way back and unchallenged for second place.
    • Sainz made an uncharacteristic error to collect Grosjean and then spiral out of control into totally innocent Massa.
    • Alonso suffering another last minute failure just as he was about to see the Chequered Flag for points must have been gutting after such an extended period of disappointment, but he learned to become philosophical a long time ago and his visit to the grandstand was very generous.
    • Ricciardo on the podium is now a daunting prospect for some but Sir Patrick did us all proud. Top Man.
    • No-one into the Wall of Champions.
    • Some questionable defending.
Lots of other stuff worth mentioning too. A pretty good race with lots going on.

It was nice to see Stroll get some points at his home GP. He was a bit overly cautious and probably could've pushed a bit harder to get himself a bit higher, but finishing and getting some points was more important. A confidence booster, lets see what it does for him.
will Palmer make it to Silverstone?

Loved it thanks . Crazy money ( for it actually was )for people people like Mrs jasper and myself , but hell of an experience . My favourite bit was the tour of the museum . Had a go in the simulator , I was useless but loved it . Struggled to get out of the bloody thing .

Lovely big screen to see the actual race . If I can figure out how to post pictures , will do so at some stage .

Live call from Massa about 1 hour before the race , quite quick but interesting .

If anyone ever gets the chance , go for it :)

Yes, I agree about Stroll and meant to mention him. Probably his best race to date.

As for Palmer: ugh… yes, he'll be at Silverstone but he's never impressed me sufficiently enough to think he'd ever be F1 material. He's safe. He knows all the principles very well – better than most who come into F1. He's also pretty thorough and he's very disciplined. But he's simply not quick enough to be on the most prestigious grid in the world.
Very much doubt he'll be with us for 2018.

Did you attend the race, Jasper? I've not read much of the thread, so if you mentioned it, I missed it.

A good analysis; but any way it's looked at, Force India's under-achievement was due to Perez, and/or the team not calling him in to maximise their advantage after finding themselves further up the field than expected and ahead of the sacrificial lamb: Räikkönen.

Also, the final paragraph (and the end of the preceding one) is, in my view, both telling and accurate…
"Here it looks like Raikkonen may have been employed doing a job to disrupt the field and help minimise the damage to Vettel’s championship lead, rather than bag a podium for himself."

Strategically, Räikkönen was sacrificed for Vettel, thus amplifying their relative performance. Räikkönen wasn't brilliant but looked worse, whilst Vettel had a good race but despite over-driving at times, his achievement was even better!

Ferrari are very canny when it comes to ensuring their number two driver cannot do a Perez: it's in the DNA of the team. Force India need to learn at least part of that mentality…

Very similar to when they sent him long (in China?) and left him in no mans land and also similar to Bottas going long in Spain.

In relation to the contra strategy you have to let the other driver go straight away to maximise the offset, difficulty with that is the lead driver knows that they are unlikely to get the payback if it fails. Hence procrastination or refusal.

Perez and Ocon have had a very similar pace in races this year, perhaps why Perez was desperate to finish ahead. It could end up biting him in the ass though. I'm sure Ocon will be asked to move at some point, and I'm sure he will, but he may now take his time about it to make a point.

A good pic for showing what driving round a park near water in summer does to you. Midge-tastic

It was a surprise to see Ocon get the nod ahead of Wehrlein for that seat, but it looks like they knew what they were doing. We're lucky in this era of Young driver academies as we're seeing more 'finesse' than 'finance' on the grid these days. Even drivers that are good enough for the grid are losing seats to better drivers coming through.

    and Ericsson and Stroll.

There will always be pay-drivers on the grid. Nowadays they just have to bring mega-backing with them.

If you turn up with 'just' a couple of million quid like they used and expect to get a drive, it won't happen. One benefit of it being an expensive sport!

well, Palmer and ericsson definitely, still hate Sauber for dumping Kamui and keeping the latter. Strollolol, ye, he wouldn't be there without his Dad's cash, but I'm more willing to give him a little bit of time, he's had a bit of bad luck (though he hasn't helped himself much), but had a very 'sensible' race in Canada there may be more to come.
