If you are insistent that he wants a big target man then Cavani?

    This season so far
    CL played 6 scored 6
    League Played 16 scored 18

    Not too bad I suppose.

Replacing Carrick will take some doing, even at his age. We have not lost a game that Carrick has started in this season, we won 5 titles in his first 7 seasons with us, the man has been a very quiet, very under rated phenomenon.

    Hmmmm....

Then, as Deschamps has learned the strengths and weaknesses of his personnel, the former Monaco, Juventus and Marseille supremo realised that a player with Griezmann’s magic isn’t best utilised on the flanks, and promptly switched his system. The Ireland match is when Deschamps had that epiphany. With the Irish comfortable and in front at halftime, Les Bleus’ boss took a gamble, withdrawing a holding midfielder and bringing on Kingsley Coman, shifting the talented teenager out wide, with Griezmann sitting in behind Giroud.

Fifteen minutes after the break, France had turned the game on its head, with Griezmann netting twice. Instant gratification.

Then on to a sodden Paris and a date with Iceland. Deschamps didn’t buckle, and went with the same formation that finished the game against Ireland. His decision was made easier by the suspension of N’Golo Kante, but it was still a bold move to overlook that midfield anchor.

Despite the conditions, plenty of Nordic defensive attention and the vociferous “thunder clap” coming from the Icelandic contingent, Griezmann could not be deterred, with all the freedom of the Stade de France to express himself.

“Griezmann is best down the middle,” French journalist Antoine Placer said. “France has plenty of talented wingers, [so] Deschamps doesn’t need to put Griezmann out there. He has been incredible for Atletico Madrid through the middle, linking up play with a neat first touch. Why change that?”

That was written before the game against Germany www.sportsnet.ca/soccer/uefa-euro-2016-france-germany-antoine-griezmann/

As for Mourinho at RM, did you ever watch them play? I know I did and the football was free-flowing and expansive. Nothing wrong with it at all. Unfortunately for Mourinho, he had arguably the best ever club side in Barca at that time... and yet by the end of his second season he matched them head to head, winning the Copa Del Rey and the league title, and in his 3rd season got the better of them when they faced each other. I remember at the time, most people (commentators and those who watched La Liga) felt that tactically Real Madrid/Mourinho were often the better team in head to heads. Jose's RM were solid defensively, but everyone from that midfield/FB's upwards attacked with pace and vigour. This I remember.

    Totally agree for once.

Probably the most underrated player I can think of. He's been a world class midfield player for years, yet he's rarely got the plaudits or recognition he deserves.

How he couldn't get in the England team for so many years il never know.

He may not have had the goal scoring ability of other midfielders, but his passing, and how he reads the game as a defensive midfielder, is up there with the very best.

It pretty much says it all about his talents, that a younger Schweinstieger who is regarded as an International great for Germany, really isn't a patch on a 35 year old Micheal Carrick in our midfield

Schweinstieger was bought to replace him. I remember Carrick being swapped with Bastian for alternate matches by LVG. Carrick will be a very hard act to follow but have we really given Schweinsteiger a chance?

However I think we have enough midfielders -(Carrick, schweinteiger, Herrera, Fellaini, schneiderling, Pogba, Mata, Depay, Young, just to name a few. What we really need is to convert all the chances we create into goals. If our conversion rate had been increased by just a quarter we'd already be in the top 4.

Is that claim made with the same level of authority as the one where you said Zlatan wouldn't score more than 15 goals this season and would be lucky to get 10?

Ah, for that level of insight into the mind of our manager and his team selections <ok>

Manchester United have triggered a clause in Marouane Fellaini's contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2018. <wah>

Even we're not stupid enough to let him leave for free. Contract extension means hopefully he'll be sold in the summer.

    And @Sweats. calls me a pessimist <whistle>

The only reason for extending his contract. The last few weeks have shown that Woodward is learning to play the game. Not before time <ok>

    Exactly.

Utd's policy is not to let contracts run less than 18 months if they want to keep the player, to avoid doing an Arsenal and losing their best players every summer. The fact we are just triggering an option (like with Berbatov) rather than giving him a new contract implies he will be out in the summer.

Valencia has extended his contract and you are apparently after Celtic LB Kieran Tierney.

    He won't be needed, our new left back is already sorted according to The Independant;

"The Red Devils are increasingly confident of signing 25-year-old Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann in the summer, but left-back Luke Shaw, 21, is set to leave. (Independent)"
