Tonight shows how far Eddie Howe needs to go before Arsenal could ever consider him as a manager. His substitions completely messed up his teams impetus and once you scored he allowed panic to course through his team.
Great come back from you but no team should ever concede a 3 goal lead at home in the final 20 mins.

Howe did FAR better than Wenger tonight.

Wenger has a far better squad & bigger budget yet Arsenal were outplayed and for 60 mins tactically out manoeuvred.

You know if I take my rose tinted glasses off (easy on the back of a poor result I guess)

I would happily take Allegri right now to replace Arsene.

Wenger is top class in certain areas but a complete dinosaur in others.

I have to say that I am very pessimistic for when Wenger leaves. I can't see beyond what happened to United after SAF left.

Wenger has done an amazing job getting us to the point where we can begin to compete with the top teams financially. FFP and the "home-grown" squad requirements, despite being far weaker than we hoped, also are bringing a greater degree of parity.

I think our managerial choice should be, like Wenger, be far more of a strategic choice, focused on Player Acquisition, Youth Program and Economic Development, than on tactical game day decisions.

I just don't think that you can plan for, or predict, the team chemistry that wins titles. All you can do is create the player development and culture that fosters such an environment, and have the economy that can support a winning team season after season.

There is no doubt that Wenger has created the economic environment, but seems to have lost (or failed to create) the culture and player development required.

So, I would say we need to look more for someone who is very good at acquiring and developing talent, rather than searching for a manager who has had playing success with big clubs, with established cultures and youth programs, or from countries where home grown players are not so important.

Germany midfielder Mesut Ozil, 28, says he wants reassurances over Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger's future before he commits to signing a new contract at the club. (Kicker - in German)

    http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/...h-moechte-erst-klarheit-was-wenger-macht.html
    Translated from German:

"I feel very, very well at Arsenal and have shown my willingness to extend against the club," says the 28-year-old world champion in the interview with the kicker (Monday issue). "The fans want me to stay, now it's just the club." The fact that the extension of the term of the contract depends on money, denies Ozil. "The club knows I am here mainly because of Arsene Wenger who has brought me the trust I enjoy. The club also knows that I want to clarify what the coach is doing." Wengers contract ends this summer. Özil also reacts to Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, who had recently made an impression against Ozil and Alexis Sanchez. The accusation of the French: the two stars would scourge the club in the contractual party with salary demands. "Everybody has the right to say his opinion," says the midfielder. "But these statements do not interest me, they do not hit me either. Such ex players or other people who give their mustard do not know what is actually spoken between the club and me."

Thoughts ? Would you be happy to see both Wenger and Ozil leave this summer ? Or would you want Wenger to stay in order to keep Ozil ?

If Ozil is only staying because of Wenger rather than because of our club then I've no time for him and he can leave. Preferably this Summer to get at least some sort of fee for him.

Also, if we're being honest with ourselves, I don't think anyone can confidently say he's justified the £42.5m we paid for him at the time. Regardless of how well people try to dress up his statistics, it's safe to say that most of us expected a lot more from him. Even this season, despite his goalscoring prowess, his performances haven't been that impressive.

I wouldn't really lose too much sleep if we sold him, to be honest. Sanchez is another matter entirely, though. He is the one we should be fighting tooth and nail to keep.

Ozil is a professional, to come out with garbage like that is very disappointing. How can he tie his commitment to that of Wenger? I reckon he is trying to pull a fast one, we have resurrected his career, he has expressed his love of going back to Spain and returning to Real Madrid, if he wants to leave with Wenger, then fine. He is no Suarez/Messi/Ronaldo/Sanchez, the grass for him is greener on the other side. Take Aguero, how many managers has he played under? He does his talking on the pitch, it is no business of his who Arsenal FC decide to manage, he cannot hold our club to ransom!

I don't believe him anyways, it is all a smokescreen I feel tying his contract situation to whether Wenger goes or leaves is just to buy himself more time. Besides, if Wenger was to leave, I suspect he will have a huge say on who takes over, and I also feel he might go "upstairs".

Couldn't disagree more, particularly in the era of transfer fees we are in, Ozil has easily justified his fee.

You must have low expectations of what you want from a £42.5m player then. At the time that we bought him and considering we smashed our transfer record by a country mile to sign him, I have been slightly underwhelmed on the whole.

Even if you don't agree, there is no conceivable way you can say he has "easily" justified the fee.

He is the player I've enjoyed watching more than any other for years at Arsenal. The way he plays football is a joy to watch. The stuff he pulls off is incredible and there are very few players in the world who can do things the way he does. Some of the assists he has made have been nothing short of amazing.

Before he arrived we struggled so often to break down teams who put men behind the ball but Ozil gives us the creativity and vision to make the unexpected ball and create chances. He has added something we very much needed. He's also produced goals and assists against the big teams. Last season he was on the shortlist for player of the season in the league, being trumped by the Leicester guys.

Then of course his stats and records at Arsenal speak for themselves. Up until the start of this season he had the best assist to game ratio in premier league history, in his first 100 premier league apps he has more assists than any player in the same amount of games bar Cantona, he holds the premier league record for assists in consecutive games, he was 1 assist away from setting the all time premier league assists in a season record etc etc....

Maybe your expectations are just set ridiculously high. Or your expectations were for something different than what Ozil as a player offers. He is still producing the same moments and using the same skill set that made him a success in Germany and Spain. I think English supporters just have a habit of only putting importance on certain attributes and not others.

I think he has easily justified the fee and is my favourite Arsenal player for a long time.

To be fair, all he said was that he wants to club to clarify what the coach is doing. That's fair enough in my opinion if you are looking to sign a contract extension.

Yeah I don't get people being annoyed at the comments.. We are more than happy to have players sign for the club and give the manager as a reason for doing so, so why is it an issue in regards to contracts? Isn't it a good thing to have a manager who is drawing top players to the club?

Wasn't sure where else to put this so just chucking it in here:

Ozil, Sanchez and Bellerin all made the shortlist for Fifa team of the year 2016. No premier league player managed to make the final 11 though!

He really needs to knuckle down and rediscover his form. I disagree that his tenure should have a bearing on whether Wenger stays or not. However, I thought Arsenal FC have matured from the past seasons, where we let our star players get to within 1.5 yrs of their contract. I accept we are where we are, I hope both players can put this contract talks aside and focus on the job at hand and try to salvage something from this season. It cannot help, having your 2 star players wrangling over contract negotiations.

First off, let me just make clear - I'm not saying I definitely want him to be sold or that he needs to go. I'm just saying that if he does decide to go, I won't be that concerned about it. It'd be a shame, yes, but it's something we are capable of dealing with.

I am not doubting that when he is on song, he is an incredible player to watch. He was, after all, part of the team that helped to end our nine-year wait for a trophy. And I am well aware that he is capable of some majestic passes and touches, but I think sometimes we need to look past the technical side of his game and see what else he offers the team. Too many times he's been on the periphery of a match where he's been bullied off the ball or lost possession easily and sulks for about 30 seconds before tracking back to win the ball again. No matter what statistics you want to use, they don't take into account the analysis of his performances. Some of our attacking moves have broken down under him and he doesn't always release the ball as quick as he should. Although his finishing has gotten better, his shooting still lacks venom and he is incredibly one-footed.

But more than this, I feel like part of the reason we spent that money on him - and baring in mind that when we bought him at that time, he was the third biggest transfer in British football's history behind Tevez and Torres - was for him to step up in the big games. Yet he has very easily been stifled in a lot of big games. I'm not saying he's never turned up for any big games, but he hasn't done it as often as he should have. I feel like he gets a free pass (no pun intended) because he could be anonymous for an entire match, then right at the end, he could pull off an amazing pass that will help us to win the game. Now, obviously a quality like that can be important to have, but it shouldn't excuse the effect he can have on our overall play and how poorly he performed for the previous 89 minutes.

Rephrase that - he's produced goals and assists in some games against some big teams. Nevertheless, producing an assist or a goal does not mean his overall performance has been that good. Santi Cazorla has much less goals and assists than Ozil does, but I know which one we're missing more at the moment because the latter is integral to how we want to play.

Not at all. I appreciate what he can bring to the side, but he is not exempt from criticism and there are certain parts of his game that he needs to seriously work on. This is now his fourth season at the club so that's more than enough time to give an honest analysis of his time at Arsenal thus far. And in my view, his brilliant all-round performances are too far and few in between. Especially as we know what he's capable of doing.

I like Ozil but he's replaceable. I'm not even sure he's any better than Cazorla was when he played ACM when he first arrived. If Cazorla played ACM now and had Sanchez around him I reckon he'd be as productive as Ozil has been these last few years. Unfortunately we'd then lack Cazorla in CM of course and be screwed that way. But yeah, we should have spent that £42m on a striker rather than Ozil really I think given we already had a top notch ACM in Cazorla. Cazorla is just as important to us, if not more so.

Quality ACMs are all over the place. Ozil would be missed for some of the things he does, but pretty quickly and easily replaced.

Sanchez would not be easily replaced. And neither would/is Cazorla as we're finding out.
